According to the booklet, the top 10% of PSLE scorers are invited to apply for a foreign language (French, Japanese, German). I'm curious to know what's the cut off point for the top 10% this year.


Have any students with <250 or <240 received this offer?.

Two of my son's friends, one with 252 is offered foreign language (French, Japanese & German) while the other one with 247 is not offered. So i guess the cut-off for top 10% is around 250?

Yes, have students below 250, so I guess the top 10% for this year starts from above 247?

Didn't read through everything in the booklet. My DS3 scored 251 and got to choose a third language option. We just take whatever was in the form and thought that it's open for students who scored above 250. :lol: :oops: He chose Japanese as I've learnt a little bit myself and think it'll be easy on him if we practise it together. I also suggest that he did it for fun and no pressure. However, he has to choose 1 from each category instead of which language he is more interested in. Have wanted to put French and German as the other choices but can't. I thought DS3 score is low and was a bit disappointed esp. when he was very relaxed during his PSLE and did very little despite my constant nagging. :x If it's in the top 10%, then I'm truly a proud mum. :celebrate:

For those choosing German, bear in mind lessons are conducted only in Bishan while Jap and French are either in Ghim Moh or Bishan.

My daughter got 246 and she got a third language option between (chinese/malay/arabic and bahasa).


So not sure what is the 10 % cut off…?

I suggest that your child take French or Japanese. Japanese is closer to Chinese and it may be easier to learn.

French has \"English Alphabets\", so your child need not learn a whole new set of ABCs.

I'm not quite sure of German though.

It also depends on whether your child is strong in Chinese or English for the ease of learning the language. French is closer to English, and Japanese is closer to Chinese. :lol:

Which language is your child interested in? A lot of girls who are interested in Japanese manga and pop culture are taking the language because it's a natural fit. They get to practise, hear and read Japanese. And that's very important in learning a new language.

Hi turquoise, the problem is she has not been exposed to any of these languages ( neither am I) and she has no preferences. While talking to some friends, I gather that French may not be as widely used/spoken as German. So for practical reasons, German may be a better choice. However I also want to ensure that the 3rd language is not a hassle, considering the many more subjects the S1 will need to cope.

:?: Hi, Im a Primary 6 student going to Raffles Institution next yr. I'm currently in the midst of choosing my 3rd Language choice. I'm considering taking Japanese as a 3rd Language but I'm not sure if I can cope with my school work . Is it possible to select a 3rd language 1st then drop out of it ltr if I can't cope with it?


Plz help. I need to submit the S1 form by 2nd December. Thx!
