MOE Relooking P1 registration - Too much priority to alumni
-
When school needs money for stuff like extra wing, renovation etc, the money from govt might not be enough so who else to turn to but the old boys n girls n church/clan.

There is nothing wrong with alumni priority. The problem is people trying to get into other people’s popular alumni. I am sure there are plenty of schools within reasonable distance of such "protesters". But no, they don’t want, just want to get into the hot school which "happen" to be right at their door step.
So I don’t buy the argument of scrapping the alumni priority especially for those schools which has built up a strong reputation precisely due to the strength of its alumni.
For all the arguments about < 1 km, if the school is not reputed, I think give them also don’t want. So I am not convinced.
Give you my own example. I stay within a stone throw from St. Nicks. If I have a girl, would I call for a scrap to all the priorities so that my girl can go to St. Nicks? And then argue "shamelessly" that it is all for the good of my girl since it is so near?
Within 1 km of my place, actually there are 2 other primary schools ie. AMK Primary and Mayflower Primary. Both within very reasonable if not walking distance. No stress if I were to register at these primary schools - plenty of vacancies at all phases!
So why should I argue and insist on going to St. Nicks and calling for scrapping and capping those priorities alumni etc.?
Sorry, I could not do it.
So I don’t buy the argument for those advocating distance priority over alumni priorities. Go to your own alumni, nobody will quarrel with you about it. -

a number have their own alumni - but don't want to go back (dislike), so \"come to SNATCH \" other people's Territoriy - create all kinds of excuse to SNATCH other people's good, popular alumni. In the same way as SNATCHING other people's rice bowl !
ARISE, all popular Phase 2A alumni - from popular, hot schools !!! do NOT let sourgrape outsiders come in trying to snatch your alumni ! STAND Up, FIGHT Back and DEFEND yourself !!! -
I’m amazed at the argument some put up to try to preserve alumni priority as if they own the primary school.
What this territory or that territory… it belonged to ALL citizens and mainly funded by all taxpayers. it is on Singapore land. It is not a private property!
It is precisely because of such selfish and unjustified sense of "ownership", that pple like some of us with no vested interest stood up for a fairer system.
Only distinguished alumni who made significant contribution should deserve entitlement to priority.
Not any tom dick or harry who benefited from that school and act as if they own that school, and want to pass that privilege to their offspring.
Who benefit more? the student or the school? if it is the school who benefit, the school should be begging the alumni to send their kids there and not the other way round.
Obviously, it is the students who benefited more. That is why they are so fighting for that "priority" to send their kids there. Because they believe their kids would benefit from the school like how they did before.
A blatant case of having enjoyed the public resource and trying to hog on to it.
Alumni priority is flawed from the very beginning for a general resource like primary school education. Borrowing what 3B said before… it has no place for a society like Singapore. -

Imagine this… those who went for NDP before argue that they should be entitled to priority to the NDP ticket for the next year, and the next year, and so on… because they are part of the audience at the previous year’s NDP, and they were part of show (the human wave etc…)… and so they contributed…
And the main argument is that the show would not have been successful if not for the audience… makes sense? You judge yourself.
Before we talked about what priority should there be or whether there need to be one…
We should consider scrapping alumni priority first. -

This example cannot be applied to alumni la...an alumni is not a spectator of a show.Imagine this.. those who went for NDP before argue that they should be entitled to priority to the NDP ticket for the next year, and the next year, and so on.. because they are part of the audience at the previous year's NDP, and they were part of show (the human wave etc..).. and so they contributed..

The subject of this thread is very misleading.
Is MOE really looking into this matter or people without alumni priority hoping they do? -
When my daughter gets married and has a girl, what can she do in order to register her daughter in alma mater?
1) must she buy within 1km of her former school to register her daughter there?
2) what if I look after my grandaughter most of the time but stay more than 2km away?
Is my granddaughter still entitled to register in her mother’s former school?
3) what criteria must be met in order for future generations to attend their parents’ former schools?
Some schools do not accept PVs prior P1 registration, like my daughter’s school. I try to help out whenever possible now. I attended the school. Now I am proud to see my gal wearing that school pinafore. -

Yah, ChiefKiasu or Class Monitor should change the topic title. The subject of this thread is very misleading.

It should be \"Discussion on Alumni Priority for P1 Registration\"
