One thing I may add, while the objective of Olympiad might have had to encourage and nourish divergent thinking, with the advent of Olympiad traing classes sprouting all over Singapore this too is being converted into a very convergent thinking process.

Sad that . But the ones who sustain long term , are those that have not let these classes lump their thinking into a preset box. No, I don’t mean these classes are useless, they expose the kids to a variety of problems, but how many do the kids really really try to solve before the sol is given?

I am an idiot with Math...when son asked me to explain question this morn, I freaked out :?: in fact I am also lost where science is concerned this year. So I told hubby I cannot cope :siam:


Starting from now, all questions done now are timed. He has to learn to work within stipulated time with speed and accuracy for all subjects...no more doing at his pleasure or he will suffer during the real thing.

Your post gave me some fruit for thought.

I’m more of a Math / Sci person than a language person. Sometimes that makes it really hard for me to understand how my DS just cannot sail through his Math / Sci exams. It’s been a really painful process. I guess for DS’s case, accuracy is a big issue. Sigh…

I like your attached article about butterflies coming out the cocoon. Conversely, I coach my daughter's Math and monitor her Math work very closely because I am a Mathematics graduate. Unfortunately, she is only getting As most of the time (hardly A*). I wonder if I should just let go and figure out herself without coming to me for help. Perhaps this helps?

same here, I coach DD maths & science. DD is so careless in her maths. She can do well in paper 2 but paper 1 is like :stupid: !!

DH says I should let go and let things run its course. My strong areas may not be DS’s strong areas. Hiaz…since prelims ended a few days ago. I haven’t pushed him. He’s enjoying himself playing.


All I see is an A grade struggling, struggling…
Whether paper easy or difficult is also no difference in grades. Harder papers DS thinks harder. Easier papers DS makes countless careless mistakes.

You can give it a try. Maybe your DD depends too much on you. I am also an idiot when come to Maths. However, my son is an A* student for Maths. He never approach me for help & he knows I can't help him.

Thanks for the advice, mummy so kiasu. I am gradually learning to let go, what will be will be. When she struggles, perhaps it will stimulate her thinking process better.

At least yours has A grade. Mine here refuses to think harder :mad: . Which subject now has questions given on a silver platter? They all require thinking.
I just issued warning, if he doesn't wake up, all resources will be withdrawn, with immediate effect and given to younger child.
