When my DS1 joined CHS in P4 3 years ago, I too received such letter… Initially, i was surprised too, but upon discussing with DH, we finally chose NOT to give as we didn’t feel comfortable doing so… Subsequently, we continued to receive such letters every year, and I simply filed/threw them away…
Though my DS1 has left CHS this year, my DS2 is still there… Yes, I received the letter last week (nope, it was NOT withdrawn), and I did the same thing as I have done so previously… No need to answer to anybody… No need to explain to anyone… No issue at all…
As meiah mentions, it is NOT compulsory, it is just an appeal… If one wishes to give, then give (willingly)… If one does NOT wish to give, then do NOT give… Simple as that… One’s child will NOT be ‘‘victimised’’ in class/school if one chooses NOT to give…
Really don’t understand some parents… If that parent wasn’t happy with something, he should have clarified the matter with the school (or the Principal), instead of complaining to an ‘‘outside party’’, and even forwarding the memo, which was supposed to be for internal circulation only… What kind of respect (if there was any at all) was he giving the school?! -

I’m puzzled and trying to understand. I first read the news from Wan Bao, the activities organised by MC, Alumni and PSG, in general, not just CHS, is it necessary to get approval from the school’s P? Or are these groups totally independent from the school?
Are there guidelines from MOE about teachers receiving expensive gifts from parents?
I know for this particular event organised by MC, CHS Alumni and PSG, the gifts are collected for lucky draw and I know it’s on a volunteered basis and as shared, students are not penalised when their parents do not participate but I still feel uncomfortable about news. -
Oh, don't know what to say. But gifts should be from the heart, even if its only a small card. Maybe some like material stuffs but its the parents who fork them out.
My kids from neighbourhood school. Usually, we bought small little gifts from popular or book store. They chose themselves for their teachers.
But this year, they chose to made their own gifts.One made his own cards, the other self knitted some craftworks. I just supplied boxes & crafts & cards materials.
I was indeed impressed with what they've done, good boys!

i first saw this article in the tnp and tried to do a copy of it here but there wasnt much info on the online tnp (i pasted what i could copy from tnp here below) and the website i pulled it from has the letter from psg.
since the school letter head wasnt displayed, i asked if it was true or otherwise.....
as to whether the website add oil, add fire to it or not, i really can see the oil and fire to this particular article.
the chinese evening papers and tnp also reported on this matter.

Tour packages, shopping vouchers, dining vouchers, home appliances and digital gadgets - that’s what the parents support group (PSG) from Catholic High School asked parents to contribute for Teachers’ Day this year.
A copy of the letter was uploaded online, where it attracted mixed reactions from netizens.
The school has clarified that as civil servants, teachers cannot accept gifts and favours given to them personally by students and parents.
名校家长会办教师节庆祝会，呼吁家长捐赠礼物给老师，“索讨”的礼品括：购物礼券、餐券、电子产品，甚至旅行配套，被部分网民批评为“奢华”。
本地一所名校的家长会最近发给家长的信件，被其中一名家长转发，在网络上引起热议。
信件内称，该学校的管理委员会、家长会和校友会，将联办教师节庆祝会，感谢教师付出的辛劳。

It’s all the doing of kpo parents.
A righteous and dedicated will be happy just with a parent doesn’t bother them and students who does their work properly.
My kids preschool had a group of PV who arranged a surprise celebration for teachers during the Sch holiday. Requesting for performance items,…etc.
It’s not compulsory to join, it’s a free choice.
This article is just a blow up of twisted facts. -
We can see...
- The popular school has done this every year... Doesn't mean it is always correct.
- \"Outsiders\" shouldn't interfere? Win Liao lor (Law)...
- Some parents can choose not to give and ignore... Doesn't mean other parents cannot voice out.
- Just cos' the \"questionable\" website reported... Doesn't make the report less true. (mainstream media also got \"questionable\" articles lor)
Hope chs kids don't grow up thinking that it's the norm to have D&D cum lucky draws as teacher's day presents.

Is this organised by the school ? Is the memo sent by the school ? Is it organised by the school ?
If it is w/o endorsement by the school, then the school really need to buck up its disciplinary efforts and rein in those affiliated/related organisations.. so as not to let them give the school a bad name. -
I feel the memo is alittle contradictory..on the one hand, they mentioned that those who \"wish\" can donate..on the other hand, they are blatantly proposing the items they want to have. These are not most people's typical gifts to teachers. :roll:
I did a double take when I saw \"current digital gadgets or home appliance, tour packages, etc”. The issue is not whether it's \"voluntary\" but that the message may be misconstrued. I'm fine if these are items under any charity's wish list which I'm more than willing to donate, but for teacher day's gifts.....
I thought I read an article about Hong Kong's students lavishing such gifts on teachers and the practice was frowned upon, I hope schools here are not going to slowly adopt this? But I would say, I believe this is the exception rather than the norm. When my DS told me the teachers in sch are not allowed to accept gifts of more than $X , I had thought it's set by MOE and applied across the board.
ps: on reading the article carefully again, could it have meant gifts for lucky draws where only a few \"lucky\" teachers would get these? :scratchhead: If so, I can accept this arrangement and contribute if I wish to. It's perfectly alright in this case, sorry if I've overlooked that.
