MOe announced Learning of English to Develop 21st Century

I fully agreed with the stellar is good foundation materials for pre-schooler.
Your DD has at least 1 composition once a month, my dd had only 2 composition for 1st half and nothing for term 3. I'm very sad to see that the teacher didn't even bother to do the thorough marking. No grade and suggestion were given and I just saw some sentences were underlined in red and some sentences were underlined with green in her returned composition. :yikes:
Honestly, I don't think the teacher is ready for the new syllabus.
This will definitely be another push for parents to either involve them-self or seek external assistance. :sad:J and J:
I can't deny the stellar is good foundation materials may be for pre-schooler or those without much explosure in English before. I agree it does not cover much in grammers or even simple sentense structure. My DD is under stellar while my DS did not. By comparing their progresses, my DS mastered his writing skill much better than my DD althought she started reading independently much earlier than her elder brother. Both have had no tuition at all. After being in Stellar program for 3 years, we have no choice but start to look for tuition for improving her writing skill. I read the stellar companion booklets for P3, the tasks covered quite comprehensive with composition task for each unit. However, most of the composition tasks were not used by the teacher. In the end, my DD only has composition once a month at most.
My concern is, are all English teachers ready for the new syllabus? Or will this be another push for parents to seek external assistance? -
To manage each and every English components is a tough job. Comprehension OE, Oral, compo, comprehension cloze are the few main areas which must be strong to score marks.
My daughter will be tested using the new syllabus. Enough of panic attacks for now. Sian…changing all the time. -

luckily current P4 to P6 pupils are safe - they escape the new change. To manage each and every English components is a tough job. Comprehension OE, Oral, compo, comprehension cloze are the few main areas which must be strong to score marks.
the last batch of kids born in 2002 sitting for PSLE in 2014 - fortunate to escape the new change(s).
but kids born in 2003 onwards sitting for PSLE English language paper in 2015 - are impacted.
New English syllabus for upper Primary students from 2013
Upper Primary students will have a revised English syllabus, from 2013.
In a statement on Monday afternoon, the Education Ministry said the revised 2010 English Language (EL) Syllabus will be introduced to students from Primary 4 onwards.
The new syllabus has a \"sharper focus on 21st century competencies\" to enable students to communicate effectively and confidently in the globalised world, the ministry said.
\"Students who are taught the new syllabus will sit for the revised Primary School Leaving Examination (PSLE) EL papers in 2015,\" the spokesman added.

Wonders if MOE has already trained all teachers prior to this announcement.
Indeed very worrying for parents.

PhoBIA:
Before the new syllabus kicks in, all teachers should be sent for thorough training first. Hey, mid-upper primary English is very crucial.Wonders if MOE has already trained all teachers prior to this announcement.
Indeed very worrying for parents.

What about tutors? :?

LOLMum:
What about tutors? :?
Quoto from stellar website.
6. Is STELLAR compulsory?
The STELLAR curriculum, strategies and materials are aligned with the English Language Syllabus 2010 and are recommended for use in all primary schools. Schools retain the autonomy to customise the curriculum and materials to suit the needs of the students. Schools also have the autonomy to include school-based curriculum alongside the STELLAR curriculum.
How will the tutors know? Too much diversity since schools are given autonomy on the cirriculum.
Maybe this is moe's first step to discourage tuition. -
Quote from STELLAR website.
5. Why is the STELLAR programme only in selected schools ?
STELLAR was phased in at a deliberate pace as studies on teacher professional development have shown that teachers take up to 2 years to fully internalize and apply new pedagogies that they have been trained in. STELLAR aims to build a critical mass of teachers with the capacity to implement and sustain the new EL pedagogy, which will dovetail into the revised EL syllabus scheduled for implementation in 2010. In Phase 1, in 2006, 30 schools were invited to pilot the programme. For phase 2, in 2007, an additional 31 schools were selected and for 2008, another 32 schools have come on board. Since 2010, with the launch of the new EL Syllabus, STELLAR curriculum materials have been made available to all primary schools.
2 years is a long time.... :slapshead: our children are guinea pigs. -
I believe that the new PSLE critical thinking question should be very easy. Some sample questions -
1. How to encourage more young Singaporeans to marry young and have more children?
2. How to foster better bonding between locals and new immigrants?
3. How to get A* PSLE without going for tuition nor parental supervision?
By the way those well connected tuition centres are ready to dish out solution for your children. Remember first to Tuition then to school. So don’t worry too much. -
So STELLAR has been around since Year 2006...
What's the pros and cons?
If the teachers are still not prepared... I will worry. :yikes:
Hope MOE knows best... Don't just implement for the sake of it.
Some of their plans are pretty out-dated, in this 21st century. :faint:
Even our government is making changes and reviewing policies....
