Well, I got a friend who took upon himself to coach a weak student one-on-one. The retribution: the parent complained to the school that his child was kept back everytime.

Geez sounds ridiculous! Could it be that a poor old granny is kept waiting outside the school gate for too long, thus the complaint? =D

The parent took it personally that my friend was prejudiced against the child for 'making the child stay back'.

It sounds ridiculous that a parent could complain against a teacher for trying to help a child only because this is kiasuparents forum. In reality, there are many parents out there who don't give two hoots to their kids' education and think they will do well in their own good time. Anyway, we digress. I don’t mind ensuring that educators feel that they are properly compensated. After all, these are the people who are teaching our children. If teachers could be rewarded based on merit and creative teaching methods (not just tenure) then I would be even more for that.

The bo-chap parents must be quite sick to complain against a concern teacher who is passionate about teaching their kids.. if they bo chap, just tell the teacher nicely not to give their kid extra lesson lah.. complain for what..

So far I mostly only came across bo-chap teachers..

Those pple who doesn't appreciate dedicated and good teacher don't deserve it.. maybe they rich and can employ $100/hr tutors..

There are many parents out there who appreciate good passionate teachers more..

If the parent think their child is kept every time, why don't they reflect and check on the child's work. If the child is scoring above 90 and doing fine, why would th teacher keep him/her?

The same thing happened to my piano students, offered them to come back at my free slot, but all ran away, :siam: or the parents say it's alright. Guess what! And the child fails the examination. Disappointing attitude from many parents rather than the students nowadays.

Most teachers are not Bo-chap when they first started teaching. Many become Bo-chap when their good work or dedication backfire on them. A good example would be the teacher who cut her student's hair for psle oral. I'm sure she had done what she had deemed appropriate for the child, in his best interest, but look what kind of trouble it got her? And it's worse in that it's the appraisal period now. I'm quite sure she would have got a bad grade for her appraisal. If I were her, I would stop being a 'busybody' from now on and do what's 'wise' and 'appropriate' for the students from now on ie. simply by being Bo-chap!

Just trying to think of possibilities why they didn't turn up. If it is a voluntary basis, perhaps

1) the kids didn't want to admit they are weak?
2) the weaker kids didn't think they were weak?
3) the weaker students are weaker because they simply loath studying - hence asking them to come for tuition to them -on a voluntary basis - just won't work? 4) If they can choose not to do it, they will choose not to do it?
5) The parents are not aware of this?
6) The children already have other tuitions?

Just trying to think of possibilities why they didn't turn up. If it is a voluntary basis, perhaps

2) the weaker kids didn't think they were weak?
3) the weaker students are weaker because they simply loath studying - hence asking them to come for tuition to them -on a voluntary basis - just won't work? 4) If they can choose not to do it, they will choose not to do it?

Good analysis concern2! There are just so many possibilities. Would be nice if we get to know the truth behind it.

I have been hearing this a lot from my Singaporean friends... It seems you just can't please everyone. Whatever you do will always be criticized.

It is hard to please.

But teachers out there, there are parents who still believe in you.
It’s a pity there are black sheep who disgrace the teaching profession…but those black sheep will show their true colors.
