may we hear further experience / opinion from more parents (both ex and current) of Haig Girls school ?

To all parents who are considering Haig Girls, I'd encourage you to go for it if you wish to avoid the heartache of balloting. I have 2 girls there and have been very happy with the school's provision of an all-round education. Both my girls have good academic performance but two different personalities - one eloquent and independent, the other shy and needs pushing/encouragement. I have seen both of them flourish and given lots of opportunities to play a role in the school - be it leadership roles, performing art, sports, CCA, academic competitions etc. Most importantly, they are generally happy and have lots of friends.

Hi: do you see any concerns in the recent drop of their academic performance and also the somwhat low chinese race mix as compared with other schools? Thanks

In fact, during open house and registration, I did notice that Chinese still form the larger population. So no worries if you are concerned. 🙂

Thanks a lot on your response, snowball. Is your daughter in HGS? I realized the school removed the results from their achievement page and is a little concerned. I read somewhere that the results is now average compared to the national scores, a significant decline since 2 years ago. Not sure what happened there. Any views on their teaching methodology?

My girl will only be going P1 in HGS next year. Was told by a friend that the teachers there are nuturing and the school is known for its performing arts. Have also read good reviews online that the school has a holistic education, not just focusing on academic excellence. I was impressed during the school open house - instead of teachers bringing us around, it was two P5 girls.. they are eloquent, confident and appear disciplined. I like the feeling the school gave me during the open house.

As for the PSLE results, they are still available on the school website. Have extracted here for ease of reference:

            PSLE 2011
Percentage of pupils who passed PSLE and were posted to secondary schools: 100%

Percentage of pupils eligible for Express Course [with E/N(A)]: 83.6%

Aggregate score of top pupils: 268

            PSLE 2010
Percentage of pupils who passed PSLE and were posted to secondary schools: 98.1%

Percentage of pupils eligible for Special/Express Course [with E/N(A)]: 86%

Aggregate score of top pupils : 270

            PSLE 2009
Percentage of pupils who passed PSLE and were posted to secondary schools: 99.4%

Percentage of pupils eligible for Special/Express Course [with E/N(A)]: 85.9%

Aggregate score of top pupils : 275

Although it appears there is a general decline in results, I'm not sure if it is conclusive.

There is a comparison with the national results too. They are better in languages especially English, but less so for Maths and Science, although they are not worse off. (Wonder if it is a girls' thing - they are usually good in languages and less so in Maths/ Science =p)

Alan8 - Is your girl registering P1 next year? Or are you transferring her from somewhere else? For P1 school registration, they have open house in Jul. Otherwise, you may like to arrange with the school for a tour or something? May be a good idea to have a ‘feel’ of the school, on top of what you have heard. 😃

                2011

HGS didn't post her 2011 PSLE figures explicitly on school website.
However if refer to bar chart pattern indicated, compared to 2010 PSLE results:-
                - 2011 Chinese had improved.

                - but her three subjects (English, Maths, Science) standard had dropped.

may pose this concern to Haig Girls’ Principal, at forthcoming P1 Orientation.
Alternatively, may contact school arrange an appointment for a school tour, bring you around.
Then address your concern(s) on the spot.

phtthp - thanks for the very useful info. 😃

think this is a good reminder to parents that results is not everything (below extracted from the principal's speech):

\"Always remember that the process of character building, of learning to be self-disciplined, responsible and resilient is more important than the results you will get for PSLE. We also want you to know that, no matter what results you get for your PSLE, we still love you and will always be proud of you. Do not let your PSLE results define who you are or how you feel about yourself. You are much more than your results.\"

                      Mummy Lynn:
This year GMPS might not even required any balloting.

As of this morning, out of 129 registered only 93 are SC (mixed of those staying 2km away).

Based on last year PSLE results:
Passed & posted to Sec Sch: 97.5%
                      Eligible for Express: 51.7%

                      Hello,

I would like to point out that the percentage given above for \"Eligible for Express\" is incorrect. The correct percentage as stated in the school memo is 63.9%.

In phase 2C (for child registered in 2012 for P1 in 2013), balloting is required for PR residing within 1-2 km.
