My P1 gal is told to \"learn\" 3 passages for dictation but only one passage will be tested for the coming test. This test counts to 5% of the overall score. Is it necessary to subject p1 kids to learning 3 passages? When I went to primary school, we only learn 1 passage at a time and it was only tested in upper primary.

How long is one passage? How many characters? I am assuming it is Chinese?

I thought I replied. Dictation is in English. Each passage has about 7-8 sentences. About 70 - 80 words.
If they have to memorise it then it's not dictation! That is memorising!
My daughter (P2) is given about 3 sentences for English dictation. I just make sure that she can spell the difficult words, which are usually in the same week's spelling list, and highlight any awkward punctutation.

They need to practise listening carefully for listening comprehension so it makes no sense for them to memorise.

She doesn't need to memorize. She has to learn the passages ie learn the words that she doesn't know. But each passage is long for P1 and she has to learn 3!!!!

Now I learn that other schools are testing up to 2 and 3 sentences. This is one of the passage.

For my daughter all the words in the dictation are included in that week's spelling or are words that they already know.

That does look quite hard for P1. And there is no need to have three.

I agree that 3 of these are tough on P1. I would be upset too because the task is so long to completion that...
            (1) the child is likely to give up half way... and not complete the homework
            (2) when this happens, getting scolded for not completing homework becomes a norm
            (3) overtime, the child is habituated to poor study habits

P1 is when one builds attitude and study habits. If I want my child to stay on task here... I would probably need to be close by to provide encouragement. This means I have be a SAHM or get a tutor or pull teaching duties after a long day at work.t is a long cycle task. Not suitable for P1.

I know it won't help your daughter much but if I were you I would feedback to the school formally. Send an email to the teacher cc the HOD and the Principal if you like. Mention that you know other schools are not doing this and ask why they need to set the bar so high. If they are following the same syllabus as my daughter's school then they are basically teaching at a P2 level which makes no sense.

Chen, she is exhibiting point 3. You are right. We started engaging a tutor in term 2 after the school started progress test. The tests are above average but many kids in her class are still able to perform. My dd is the minority.

Nms1, after reding other parents response, I am going to ask the form teacher again. Thanks for your suggestion.

No it isn't. Just a neighborhood school in the north east.

if its not a branded sch, i dun see the reason why they need to set the benchmark so high...

did u speak to the teachers before?? or maybe can call up the sch to ask??

I would be worried if the highlighted is the case. That only means either all the others kids have SAHMs (unlikely) which were diligent to help with the spelling tests or, they have tutors or go for English enrichments (more likely). My family is in neither catagory, and I have a girl coming to P1 next year  What you posted is beyond what most P1s are expected to know (\"prowl\", serious?). That's the vicious cycle of tuition which teaches ahead and which pushes the bar higher and higher in class since schools have to set tests that \"differentiate\" the kids. What worries me even more is this is a neighbourhood school and not the branded ones..

The form teachers tells me matter of factly. It is not just her class that will be sitting for this test. It's given to the whole cohort.
