Is your workplace pro-family?
-
Not all female bosses are this unreasonable lah. I’ve had very good female bosses before. And I’ve had ridiculous micro managing male bosses too. And I find that it is usually that 1 or 2 person not the entire company culture that is non-pro family.
In an MNC that I worked in, they practise hotdesking. Meaning staff are assigned lockers but not desks. You come in log in at a station and log out when you are done. Staff are not expected to be in the office all the time, especially sales staff. But come this new manager, he insists that we have to submit a daily report of all the clients we have met and a summary of our meetings. He insists that we have to report into office before our 1st client meeting and back again after our last one. When you are on leave, he expects you to still be contactable. Sales staff in another division are experiencing a totally different thing. They have total autonomy over their time. They just drop an email to their boss for a personal day if they have stuff to attend to or are not feeling well. Their boss managed them base on trust, giving everyone a benefit of a doubt, treating all like mature, motivated individuals. Guess which division I eventually moved to. Haha -
My observation is this. Many MNCs have pro family policies. However, it’s up to the individual running the team/department and whether the staff dares to make use if such policies. Having these policies created by HR is not use if :
1) bosses are not supportive
2) employees dare not make use for fear of repercussion.
Since the day I started working my bosses (all female) have hinted or told me directly that it’s not about knocking off work on time but the ability to complete the daily assigned task and take on additional roles. They fail to realize employees are working for work life balance especially now since I am a working mother. -
My boss definitely not pro family and always reprimand those staffs take leave on Mon or Friday, only allow weekday apply leave...nonsense right :siao:
Till he got his own family and baby, then he now much more busier than us..every week sure early off or late come, and work 3-4 days a week...
At least now life easier for us  -

My ex-boss told us outrightly that we shouldn't take mc on Monday or Friday but he himself either often left early or was rarely in office. My boss definitely not pro family and always reprimand those staffs take leave on Mon or Friday, only allow weekday apply leave...nonsense right :siao:

I notice that most bosses don't allow employees to take paid childcare leave unless it's mc-based. That to me is quite telling of whether the company is pro-family. -
I think only the govt sector practise these pro family policies. The private sector not so "on". Think the govt sector also has blue sky day, leaving office while still light.

Not true lah. MNCs do have pretty good employee welfare and pro family practises. In fact, I see govt sector still playing catch up with these MNCs.
Quite a few MNCs do offer paternity leave, compassionate leave for even granparents. The few MNCs that I worked in, most adopt a mobile workforce wherever possible so working from home is quite the norm. Flexi-hour was also not unheard of. And that was 10yrs ago when I was still in the corporate world. Even then, the company practise family dinner day where they chased everyone out by 5.30pm. And there is the bring your child to work day, etc.
But whether or not these practises are supported depends largely on your immediate superior. -

My company has all these practices. But nobody enforces especially the bosses. It's unheard of to knock off early unless you are extremely sick. Taking mc is frowned upon.
On my first week at work I asked for access to work from home and was food it's been denied due to the cost of maintaining the access. -
ok lets flip it over
if you are the boss / manager
would you be ‘pro-family’ and how ‘pro-family’ would you be? -
I guess I am pretty much lucky then that my company's culture is pro family. All of us in my department and level leave on the dot daily at 6pm except for my immediate boss and one colleague. Boss is also very easy about leave, never once my leave was not approved
Lateness is of 5 to 15 mins is never an issue but we will inform boss if later than that and she is okay too. I can't complain much.
The only drawback in my current place is promotion and growth are quite stagnant. And that draw me to ask a question: Will you still try to go out to venture for some other jobs that can pay you higher pay and growth but you don't know whether the company is pro family or not or will you stay put in the current that is pro family? I am no longer young, another few more years will hit the big \"40\"! -
happy to be mum:
If I need the money, pro-family or not has no impact on me. In any job, if you need the money, you work your ass off and don't see your kids or spouse for days and it's justified. If you are happy with the current pay, you would be more inclined to want work-life balance and pro-family measures.I guess I am pretty much lucky then that my company's culture is pro family.
