Press on with your plans with your ds. We will cheer you on. Language is not peg to age, I work towards PSLE std while matching the pace of my dd1. I believe that primary school std competency is achievable. Your ds will be able to pull thru with your love and perseverance. :rahrah: :rahrah: :rahrah:

The Hod said that selection was done when teacher tried to make conversation at the beginning if the year... My son sounds knowledgeable.. So that teacher selected him...
I told her my son is very poor in Chinese.. So I'm not too sure about the selection results..
So she checked with the teacher... After which she called me and said... Since i know my son better and thinks he's not suitable that she think should take him out...
                    I agreed
IMO, Kids tend to behave differently in school and home? so maybe your ds did do better in school which is why they selected him. They might have seen something which we didn't.

I doubt the schools will select a kid if they think they don't have the capacity to learn and whilst parents know their kids best, I would reckon to give the school and child a chance, you never know what you might see out from it.

A missed opportunity but next time round if your ds makes the cut, do let him try 😄

My kiddo's preschool chinese teacher told me my kids have no problems learning Chinese. In fact, they are way capable. Their barrier is me. I have not given them enough exposure and have not made the effort to make Chinese books easily accessible to them. I did not speak to them in mandarin though I am able to. So in their teacher's eyes, I am their stumbling block. 😓 And to a large extent, I agree with her.

I agree with Kissgurami that children behave differently at home and in school. At home, I can hardly dig a single word of mandarin out of DS but with his Chinese teacher, I've heard him speaking with clear diction. In fact, I was even worried that DS did not know how to read when he was in K2 only to be told by his teachers then that he can not only read but he can write complete and grammatically proper sentences without any help.

I was surprised when DD now in P3 was given the opportunity to do HCL. On one hand, I was worried that it will be additional stress but on the other hand, it is more exposure to the language which she gets pretty little of at home. So we let her take HCL but tampered our expectations where results are concerned. And if she is given the chance to continue HCL in P4, we will want her to.

Everytime I come to this thread I get a little stressed and feel kinda guilty. You guys are doing a lot with your P1 kiddos. Beyond the giving DS his tingxie and spelling, I have left him pretty much alone. Honestly speaking without year end exams, I also dunno how he is faring.
