Maid to get weekly rest days
-
Halimah implement this policy right after she won the elections. I spent a lot of time corresponding with MOM, providing feedback, interview and realised that they are serious abt implementing this policy. They are not asking for feedback, they are telling us to be mentally prepared. Knowing there is no hope in withdrawal of this policy, I write to her directly pleading her to give us time and implement this policy 2 yrs later, which is 2013. And so she did and officially announced this policy 9mths before the Dragon baby years starts. During Dragon year, everyone will still give birth regardless of such a unfavorable policy.

my helper have been asking me to revise her contract. according to the recent MOM megazine for FDW, it was printed as we only need to give FDW 2 off day a month, and can exchange off day with $$. so now which is which? I am confuse.

My understanding is that the weekly off is only applicable for contracts incepted effective 2013. The maid whom I took last weekend has only 1 off day a month but our arrangement is that she will be paid in lieu of.

Your helper is smart and knows the market conditions! If u don't give in to her, she may threaten to quit in the end. -
The "new" FDW is also aware of the weekly rest days. My friend’s new Filippino maid supposed to arrive this month, now back out and she only wants to come in January.

NY1969:
The rules do not change until January 2013 and it states that they are entitled to every Sunday off unless there is a MUTUAL agreement for them to be compensated. As far as I know there is nothing about 2 Sundays.braverymom:

If my current maid is getting $450 with 1 off day. What would be a reasonable pay package when I renew her contract next year? Is it a norm to offer $500 with every Sunday off? So if she does not go for her Sunday off, I will have to pay her about $20 per Sun? That sounds a lot of $$$ to me.

The calculation is that you divide her salary by 23 for amount that you have to pay her for each Sunday. So if you pay her $500 you will have to give her $22 for each Sunday which would mean if she continues with 1 Sunday off you would be paying her just under $570 a month.
If you don't need her on Sunday but she doesn't want to take the day off, you can try to tell her she can stay at home and rest (assuming she has her own room) -
If you hire a maid in year 2013. She is entitled to compulsory weekly off day. You can ask her to take one or two day off day per month but you have to compensate her with money. She makes the final decision as to whether to agree to your terms. If not, she can report you to MOM for not giving her the rights of weekly off day.

This really sucks!!
Family with young kids and no parental support to look after them definitely need a maid.
But with the new rules kicking in from Jan 2013, it will become more difficult to retain your current maid as she will try to get more salary and more leaves.
If you do not agree, they will threaten to leave you…ayyah… on top of this the average maid salary will go up by $50~80 also.
Government should help families by atleast reducing the maid levy…
