      The shorter the better!

i don't understand why they can't just start the school year from the first Monday in January instead of insisting on starting on the 2nd - that would make it much simpler.

If we adopt what you suggested, then first day of school in 2013 will be
Jan 7 instead of Jan 2.

You end up having longer 2012 year-end holidays instead of \"The shorter the better!\" 😂

But it will be more sensible. If Jan 2nd falls on a Thursday it doesn't make sense to start school. And given that Jan 1st is a public holiday it prevents families from taking advantage of that to go away for a holiday or even to do much on New Year's Day - who is going to have a busy day out when the next day is the first day of school?

I think you will find many other countries will always start school term on a Monday.

You will find out in a year.

Jan 2 2014 is Thursday, and.....
        Jan 2 2015 is Friday!!

Don't get me wrong, I agree that it's better to start the school year on a Monday.
What I find funny is that it directly contradicts your wish that \"shorter is better\" when you get more days of holidays if we don't start school on Jan 2. 🙂

I know it contradicts but the Jan 2nd thing is ridiculous - we all have to rush the end of our year-end break to get them back to school.

My parents live overseas which means that now the children are at school we will never be able to visit them for New Year but will have to come back after Christmas spoiling both the holiday and wasting our public holiday. They cannot come here as they need to be with my grandmother.

i dun like shorter holidays… i prefer longer cos it means more time for kids to rest n play…

we usually go for 2 weeks yr end holiday, and after come back still hv 1 mth to self study to catch up next yr syllabus… when sch reopen, everything will be so rush and busy… i prefer longer ones… anyone here same mindset as me?

Prefer shorter school holidays. Too long a holiday the child’s lazy bones grow roots already! Difficult to put them back into routine.

Look at Malaysia’s school holidays I think June is 2 weeks only.

I would rather they do not rush the syllabus. Give the child more time to absorb and internalise.

I think for most families with working parents the longer the holiday, the bigger the problem. We can't take leave for the whole school holidays which means the children are either at home bored (if you have someone to look after them) or we are spending money to send them to camps etc. to keep them busy. I agree that they need a break but I would prefer it to be a bit shorter. We have already had so many days of school being closed this term and the holidays haven't even started.

I went to school in the UK where we had 6 weeks in the summer but as it was summer we would go and stay with my grandparents by the sea or if we were at home we would be playing outside all day every day. You don't see Singapore children do that much and it's not safe now to let them play outside alone.

maybe that's true for many parents here... for me, i stop camps and enrichments for them as i want them to self study at home with me... i hv relatives offering to bring them out now and then so i dun really take leave to stay at home with them...

Whether the holiday is long or short does not matter. Most important is teachers don’t ask the children to go back to school and start teaching next year’s syllabus.

this i totally agree. for year end holidays, kids should not have to return to school at all...teachers themselves should enjoy a break.

I would refuse unless my child had performed really badly the previous year and it was kind of remedial.
