Maybe the norm now is 1.5hr for both theory & practical. As learning piano is not cheap, usually agency / teacher quote 1 hr. If you can afford and also you think your child cannot learn much from 1 hr, then you can ask for 1.5hr.

hi, i need some advise on getting a good piano teacher. The agency recommended me a piano teacher who told me that Theory and Practical Grade 6 can be taught together within 1hr. Do you think 1hr for both theory and practical is sufficient?

I thought most kids do not go past Gd 5 theory. My dd only did Gd 5 theory in order to take Gd 8 practical. However, I do think it is a good idea to continue on learning theory.

I feel 1 hr shd be sufficient for both practical and theory - 15mins theory and 45mins practical.

My dd is taking grade 7 now and only 1 hr. she only take grade 5 theory and so far, no intention to take grade 6,7 theory. The 1 hr lesson covers for both practical and theory explanations/guidance. But we shall see what the teacher would recommend after her grade 7 practical exam mid next year, if she should go for the theory as well. My dd goes to her house, $300 for 4 lessons, 1 hr each.

At gr 6 level, 1 hour definitely not sufficient to cover both theory and practical. The amount of understanding needed for gr 6 is not easy at all. It’s in depth with a lot more history of music involved. I have students who come to me for 45 mins lesson of only theory gr 6, 7 and 8. Of course one doesn’t need gr 6, 7 and 8 theory, not even at diploma level, but some students find that they understand the practical part better with an understanding of the theory behind it.

My girl is 6 years old. I bought a 2nd hand piano for her when she started her home lesson.

She use keyboard before that, when I started her with some music enrichment course when she is much younger.
Hi honeybeel, how is your girl's teacher? Is she good?

Yes, she is good and flexible on the lesson arrangement. And I think the charges are reasonable too.
