May I know what is Maths olympaid? does GESPS has this?
Maths olympiad is mathematics at a higher order covering topics like combinatorics and geometry etc.. Usually out of the normal maths curriculum.
An example of a maths olympiad question at P5 level is as follows:
In a playgroup, there are 5 boys and 3 girls. how many ways are there to arrange the children such that girls sit together?
In GESPS, students who did well in P4 mathematics will be asked to sit for a maths olympiad selection test in P5. About a group of 20+ students will be selected and maths olympiad lessons conducted by both GESPS teachers and an external vendor. These students will be preped for the following national maths olympiad competitions:
Pri 5 - NMOS (organised by NUS High)
- Mathlympics (organised by ACS Independent)
Pri 6 - SMOPS (organised by HCI) ...etc.
While Maths olympiad in GESPS starts only at Pri 5, I do know that there are many other schools starting such classes at Pri 3.

Yeah, it's like enrichment in maths. To teach kids how to think out of the box. Traditionally, PSLE Maths will have 1 to 2 math olympiad type of questions (which are tougher), presumably to sieve out the A* from the A scorers.

By no means will the child be termed as 'lousy' if he/she is not put into the school math olympiad team. Remember, in this school, only about 10% of the students are into this.
The school does however, arrange for holiday program 'Think Tank' starting at Pri 4, to expose kids to solving math questions by thinking out of the box. Rather beneficial, i feel.

i wonder when GESPS going to be a single session school :xedfingers: ...i have 2 kids ..the girl currently in P2 and the boy will be in P1 next year ...as you all know P1 n P2 are in afternoon sessions while P3-P6 are in morning session ....it would be much easier for both to be in single session so that i could arrange my working timing .. :roll:

Fully understand the logistics problem u face. Unfortunately, I hv not heard wind of the school going on a single session next yr.
From what I understand, it was scheduled to undergo upgrading this year, but this didn't happen. Till the upgrading is done, I believe the school would then work towards a single session.

Any advice from existing parents on the teachers? Are they dedicated and nurturing or just plainly strive for academic?
Also, anyone know if the sch has good support for special needs students?
How’s this sch’s academic standard? Are the passes of all subjects on par with national average or lower? I m actually also looking at Zhangde Pri which is more popular than GES but their passes for each subject is lower than the national level.
And are the students well behaved and generally from what background?
Is their student care services still operated by YMCA and is it within the school compound?

The teacher mix ranges from the rather stern ones to the very friendly and nurturing ones. It is the school's belief to provide kids with a more holistic education so, as a parent of the school, besides the normal work load, we can expect many activities going on at the same time - Ranging from CCAs, learning journeys, mass school walks around the vicinity, informal performances at the school's \"Arts Jam\" corner during recess time, exchange programmes with international schools, hosting school visitors, learning about entrepreneurship manning a store at the selling point, planning for fun fair.etc.
Its niche CCAs are Choir/Band/Basketball & Scrabble.
The school also believes that more kids should be given a leadership opportunity and a comprehensive leadership programme starts from P2 onwards. The types of student leadership available are \"Little Leaders (in P2) and comes P4 onwards, selected students will become Library/Sports/IT leaders, or Prefects.
As for support of special needs kids, apologise that I do not know the specifics but I do know of several such students in the school and doing fine. The school has counselling and also LSP support to help kids who needs special attention in picking up English and Math.
PSLE results for this school is around the same as that of zhangde - below the national level.
Students of this school are diversified. It's a mix of really well-behaved ones and some rather naughty and mischievous ones... I am spotting more foreign students over the last few years. Gan Eng Seng Primary school has a high number of students on FAS (financial assistance scheme). The school supports these kids in many ways - eg. finding sponsors for these kids' breakfast in school, designing free programmes to engage and enrich them after school (picking up culinary, dance, singing skills). At P5 level, all students will go Batam for leadership and CIP experience in an orphange. (the school even paid for some kids to apply for a passport).
The school believes strongly in communicating with each child. They hold 1-to-1 session (between the kid and his form teacher) at least 3 times a year. During this session, the teacher will chat with the kid on areas other than academic. eg. problems encountered, hobbies, etc. Breakfast is provided for kids going for 1-to-1 session.
The YMCA before and after school care is still in the school premise.
To sum it all, I would say that GESPS does not focus solely on academic aspect but more on giving each kid an all rounded exposure. Having said that, I'd have to say that academic focus moves up the curve starting P4 onwards, peaks at P5, and slows down after mid yr of P6 (les the kids suffer from burn out).

Many thanks for the detailed response on GES. Your kid is at which level?
And as a parent, are u concerned about how the school fares for its PSLE results i.e below national level?
And what makes u decide to send your kid to GES instead of say Zhangde or Radin Mas primary?
While I am pleased to learn about the programmes that GES has in place for their students to give them an all-rounded education, I am abit concerned about the PSLE result being below national level. I am not looking at a top school of course but I thought the result should at least meet national level?
From your post, I also learned that the students of GES are generally from lower-income families which should not be a major issue but based on my experience from my alma mater, students from low income family are usually less motivated and more mischievous. I am not discriminating but worry about school bullies. I myself had been a victim of school bullies, not in primary but in sec school.
Is your kid happy in the school so far? is the school bullying situation rampant?
Is the principal and teachers approachable and listen to parents’ feedback or respond to parents’ emails or queries?
And is there a Parent Volunteer Group in the school? cos I am to enroll my son there, I would like to join.
