What in your opinion constitutes a high proportion?

      30 to 40% maybe?

30-40% of a cohort in NYGH for instance would be about 120-160 students? I seriously doubt that there are that many foreign (China) students in one cohort.[/quote]Nobody knows for sure unless the school is willing to reveal the stats. Anyway doesn't really concern me, me and my kids did PLSE a while back. Just wondering why our locals kids let them beat us at our own game and why there are so loopholes not plugged. The issues are too sensitive to discuss openly I guess. 🦆

I give free tuition to low income family at a charitable organisation. From time to time, students from Rgs and Hwa Chong come to do CIP. Most of the students from Rgs are Singaporeans while those from hwa Chong, 6 JC students are all from China n here on scholarship since secondary school days.

Just for comparison which schools most of the foreign students go to.

Isnt foreign scholars spread out among the schools? I dont think its any individual schools initiative but rather are allocated by moe.

What is scary is that Singapore seems to be heading towards the direction where anyone who does not achieve the level of success he or she desires (or for their children) can just blame it on the system or so-called ‘unlevel playing field’. Seriously? I don’t think they are going to find a playing field anywhere else in the world that is much more level than what we have here.

This new MOE directive only serves to push us further towards that direction.

Why don’t we just scrap PSLE, O-levels, A-levels, IB altogether? It’s too stressful and the playing field is never level because the well-to-do will have the resources to give their kids an advantage. Heck, let’s scrap university degrees while we are at it. Just give anybody who applies the job they want. And if the number of hopeful applicants exceed the number of vacancies, we can always ballot. At the least, the playing field will be fully ‘level’.

Oh, wait. That’s not fair too. If the rich get sick, they can afford to go overseas to consult a real doctor…

                Good point.
Without LKY, probably we won't even have this GEP/DSA/IP issues to consider. Most of us will probably not be as educated as we are now. Can even look over our shoulders & rejoice over our less stressful, less competitive life.

Well, maybe in the near future we can look forward to such blissful lives. :boogie:

Haha, yes, indeed, CayennePepper, :imanangel: it'd be so blissful that me/my children would be the smartest of all in the neighborhood, but then again, those below still would complain and lobbying for the bar to be lowered, yet again (?)

Then, one day we will be blissfully look around SG that ALL OF
US ARE IN THE SAME INTELLIGENCE LEVEL, no one is smarter than the other, so peace with all (?)

                  Agree!
Once upon a time, our Education system caters for children from all walks of life ranging from hawkers, politician to millionaires. Differences in wealth has never been a factor that dictate how well you do. Sadly, it has been a factor today. Nanyang has become an elite school n there is no diversity now.

Why must group all the students with similar ability in one school? As such, nanyang has become an elite school and students mostly from similar background.

Honestly, I shouldnt have complained about it as my dc has benefited and will continue to enjoy the privilege from the current system if nothing has changed!

However, is it correct? privilege is not going to help them and can weaken them. I may jeopardize my dc's future by calling for a change.

                  至少他能理直气壮,活得坦坦荡荡。

I'm curious, parents who are not agreeable to DSA, GEP, are you jealous?
I used to think like you and my ears were shut and not listening n went all the way to brush people off. When I open my ears, my hearts open. I open to the world that I have never been.

I only read the last few pages of this thread and saw that there’s some discussion on GEP and would like to share how I feel as well.

GEP is not the thing causing all the stress at psle. What’s making psle so stressful is the high stakes involved. If you get into an IP school, your JC, and a good one too, would more or less be taken care of. If there’s any removal to be suggested, I say remove DSA and IP.

If you have seen or been in contact with the Geppers, you will know that these are kids truly different from your average intelligent kids. Their intelligence is innate. They need to be taught at a different, more advanced pace. The reason why GEP is started is to cater to these children’s needs for intellectual stimulation at a much higher level. They were bored with the normal lessons, that’s why GEP was started. Without GEP, these children’s intellectual talents would not have been recognized. So GEP should not be scrapped.

I was alittle disappointed that my kid didn’t get into the programme. ‘A little’ because deep down inside, I knew she wasn’t the top one percent, yet I had hoped she could get in to enjoy all the benefits that come with the programme ie. the small class size, more attention, dsa, more ‘love’ from everybody else etc.

But I know that these gifted kids do deserve what they are getting, simply because they are born that way and have the potential to be the cream of the crop in our society. That would also mean that they could handle things and process information more quickly, at a more advanced level, when they become surgeons and lawyers.

To me, those who call for GEP to be scrapped is really sour-grape mentality. Either that or they really have no idea what GEP is all about. Even if the kids are trained at P4 for psle, they deserve to be because P4 stuff is too simple for them. You want your own kid to be trained for psle at P4? Make sure your kid can handle it first. From what I know, some Geppers are even doing sec one and two maths at P6, because P6 stuff is too simple for them already! So it’s no wonder they ace at psle. For what our kids are struggling at, they already mastered it. They do deserve the high scores.

It’s true that alot of these kids get more exposure to stuff, and early too, because their parents have the money. Then earn more money and give the same exposure and opportunities to your own kids. If you can’t afford to, like me, who’s to blame?

Since you work with these foreign students a lot, can you confirm what I heard about Hwa Chong JC having special affiliation to certain top unis in China, and that is why they are all concentrated in Hwa Chong JC, where all HCI and NYGS foreign students want to go?

RGS/RI probably has a mix of foreign students.
