      Thanks v much for all your replies. Given answer by school is 1663. 1663 is full 4 marks while 798 is only 1 mark (for consolation!). DS and friends in school usually good in Maths also puzzled.

      The school teachers had decided that 798 is also an acceptable answer. DS was so happy! 🕺

      They should have make both answers to be the correct one :evil:

          Hi tracywham ,
          Let me try

          D=11os
          Calvin + Dave (11os)= 172
          Calvin+ 1os = 92
          So, 11os - 1os = 172-92
          = 80
          1os = 8
          Calvin = 92-8
          = 84

          Hope this helps !

                  $172 (Calvin and Dave) - $92 (Calvin and Oscar) = $80 (How much Dave has more than Oscar)

                  Dave has = $80/10*11 = $88

                  Calvin has = $172-$88 = $84

                    Hi, need help below.

                    John bought total 22 pens and pencils.
                    Each pencil cost $1 and each pen cost $1.50
                    He spent total $27.
                    How many pens and pencils did he buy?

                    It was told that can only use assumption than guess and check method.
                    My working below.

                    Assume 22 pencils; 22x$1=$22;
                    $27-$22=$5;
                    $5Ă·$1=5
                    But 5pens is $7.50?

                    I am stuck here. Please help…

                    Thanks

                      Assume 22 pencils $22 x $1 =$22
                      $27 - $22 = $5
                      $5 / $0.50 = 10 pens
                      22 - 10 = 12 pencils.
