Queen or Maid:
If you hire a maid in year 2013. She is entitled to compulsory weekly off day. You can ask her to take one or two day off day per month but you have to compensate her with money. She makes the final decision as to whether to agree to your terms. If not, she can report you to MOM for not giving her the rights of weekly off day.

Weekly off days ruling are also applicable to work permits issued with less than 2 years validity due to passport expiry date and up to for extension this year. It will be taken as new application…. :stompfeet:

Hah!! my new filipina maid came in last month and her passport expires in
Jan 2014. Shes not really worth keeping, slow. fat and lazy... so I guess I need nt tolerate her since the agent and her filipina agent did not advise me on this. I really wanted to change her but didnt know the new law applied to renewal too. So I hv been tricked.I was told weekly offapply to those coming in this yr.
No wonder she refuse to renew her passport in phillippines.
I don't want to pick a fight but while she may be slow & lazy, there is no need to say she is fat.

??? I don't understand why you say that the agent tricked you (I'm not taking agent's side).
And why did you bring up the matter of the weekly day off? This does not apply to your maid since she started last month (Dec 2012)
        :?

I think the issue is that MOM has been taking the stance that if the work permit is renewed after Jan 2013, even under an existing contract, then the off-day rules apply. Personally I disagree with this as the contract is for two years therefore the terms & conditions should be valid for two years.

I used to be on an EP when I first came to Singapore - my terms & conditions didn't change every time I renewed, they changed when I was promoted or given a pay increment.

Doubt that she can renew her passport that is still with a validity of 1+ year; passport holder is eligible for renewal only when the passport's validity is less than 6 months due to foreign countries' visa (visitor) requirement or the passport pages are used up.

Excuse me, do you have a problem with the word fat What is wrong with calling her fat? She IS FAT!!..looks different from her picture in the bio That is a fact! Lets call a spade a spade. If she was skinny or short I would say so! It is an accurate descriptive word of my own maid whom you have not seen so you have no right to make such a comment.

I just don’t see the relevance of her being fat unless she is so fat she can’t do her job. I bet most of us look a bit different from the nice photos we would put on a job application.

Forgive me if you are offended but I feel sometimes we say things about maids which we wouldn’t say about someone who worked for us in the corporate world.

After this nonsense policy kicks in, I have to spend almost all my Sundays at home 😞

My experienced Indo maid get $520 now with 1 off day per month.

She doesn’t want offday on weekly basis coz she doesn’t want to spend money on her ‘extra’ offdays, so agent negotiate and get her $520 salary now.

This stupid policy actually make us pay more only! I don’t think I can afford a maid if their salary keep on increasing at this rate (30%~40% annually), eventually more and more Working mothers will choose to give up their jobs and become SAHM, I definitely will be one of them!

SG govt, you want to boost SG low birth rate? Solve our Maid problems FIRST!!

Yes I agreed with Mephiro! Maid got off days then working mothers have no off days!
