When do you start looking for tuition teachers?
-
1-2 weeks after SA2 exam.

Having been in this industry for so long, it’s common to see highly sought after tutors closing their slots as early as November (like November 2012 for year 2013). Usually current students will also recommend their family friends, close friends, cousins and siblings. Some might even go to the extend of forming their own groups so that you can teach them together. Current students no doubt they will have priority but timing and days must still fit. Chances are tutor’s lessons are back to back on most days.
Personally I feel that the best time to find tutors are sept to oct (if someone recommends u a good tutor) or nov to dec (latest). Any later will become increasingly difficult.
Just my 2 cents worth!
I hope everyone gets a suitable and delicated tutor! -

When I was in sec 1 only managed to get in through recommendation from one of her ex student which is my moms friends daughter.Having been in this industry for so long, it's common to see highly sought after tutors closing their slots as early as November (like November 2012 for year 2013). Yea. My kids’ centre sometimes also have to form new classes to accommodate even more students. my kids only got in after recommendation from my sister’s daughter, my niece who is currently still with them for E/A and Chemistry Class.
Now my friend’s turn to wait after i recommended her. -
If you try to find nearing exam, normally all good tutors have already fully booked. Even if you try to send to tuition center with a strong tutor, it is always crowded nearing exam time.
Better u try beginning of the year. But if your child is smart enough, maybe it’s ok not to send him/her for any tuition so early, so can save cost…

I started early Nov. Don't want to wait till Dec or Jan...all the good teachers/centres already full. My current centre recently shifted to the East, easier for me! My girl likes the science and maths lesson

I start tuition for my kids in early Dec. Nov would be sort of like a break for them. But for my elder boy cos this year is PSLE, he has been with his current tutor since P5. Made the tutor promise me she wont leave us until his PSLE :imcool:
As I work part time as a tuition coordinator, I have access to a list of tutors and their credentials plus feedback from parents, so I can choose from there a suitable teacher for my children. I only use private home tutors as I'm not confident of group lessons from my own experience as a child.
Good tutors are indeed hard to come by and surprisingly, my children's better tutors are those still studying as the subjects they are teaching are still quite fresh in their head and i think the age plays a part, they can communicate better?? One bad point is, after they are done with their own studies, they will say byebye to me and my kids leaving me to go through the search process again :nosebleed: -
This CA, my p5 had a >10points drop in math, which he usually self studies topical topics with my husband coaching for heuristics questions. So this holidays, we were working onhis math as his main weakness is shortage of time, which resulted in him rushing through and no time to check, he claimed, for paper one. For paper two, he needed longer time to think which heuristic to solve. Looking at some of the questions he was working on in revision, my husband realises it is now beyond him to coach. He is open to engage a tutor to shorten son’s learning process and can see son is trying to work on his weaknesses, but lack a competent guide. Son is now upset that his dad could not help him anymore and he does not want tuition. I want to lighten his learning load but does not want to hamper his learning skills nor discourage him from one this once less than satisfactory performance, yet worry that time is not on our side.

1) For parents to assimilate the capabilities to continue teaching their children. tianzhu and cimman are 2 clear examples of parents who have achieved this with amazing success, but this is not for the faint-hearted. It takes time, discipline, dedication and interest to do this for any continued period of time.
2) For parents to outsource to professionals. This is the more practical approach, but it's not for free either. Not only must parents ensure that the tuition is effective, they have to deal with other issues such as logistics, timing, trust, and of course, cost.
My suggestion is that you start evaluating suitable math tutors. At P5, this would be the right time to start, instead of waiting until P6 and PSLE.
