I may be opening myself up for a lot of criticism here but.....

Put yourself in a maid's shoes. You tell her that if she takes a day off she has to pay for her medical - because you assume she will be sleeping around?! Isn't that a total insult? Yes, I agree there are some who do, but there a lot who don't. They just go out, meet their friends, send money home and that's it.

I think whether rest days should be given really depends on the circumstances under which the family hired the maid.

It's not productive to argue based on ethics and morals. Obviously, it is morally right to give workers a day off every week. However, I would like to know what the proposed solution is, for example, for a family which has hired a maid to care for an elderly parent.

Are alternative forms of home help readily available in Singapore? Is it affordable?

It's easy for people with strong family support to dismiss protests against the day off as a travesty for human rights. But real families have to worry about what happens to their sick parent when the maid goes for a day off, especially if they lack support from other members of their family.

I think that before we dismiss the protests against the mandatory off day as noises from selfish people, we should try to listen to the concerns. It's not constructive to make moralistic arguments.

I don't have a maid personally, but of the people whom I know, none of them have maids because they are lazy. They hired maids because they really need help at home. Among my good friends with kids, none of them have maids. It is presumptuous to think that Singaporeans are all lazybums who can't wait to throw their responsibilities to their maids (though, no doubt, there will be such people around). :boogie:

            Mother777,

Just one thing I have to say:
you are not your maid’s OWNER (as stated in your post, item #3)!

Halimah is seriously ruining most of the working mothers’ career and life.

There is an alternative, compensate them their 1 day's wage. Affordable or not, that is subjective. A lot of employers will say not affordable since before this rule kicked in there was no need to compensate. But if we open our eyes and look beyond our own backyard and recognise that maids are going to other countries because of better terms, we will learn to accept this change as well. If you are paying your maid $450, that 1 day compensation is about $17. Is that an unreasonable amount to pay someone for a whole day's work?

I do think though, that the levy can be lowered.

                    Apologize my friend!

I agree nobody owns the other person. Should have written as employer.
Anyway…our woes have no quick solution…

If the maid has to be given additional leave, atleast the govt compensate us by waiving off the levy?

On top of the salary, levy each month, as employer we are still paying for their food, lodging, personal hygiene products and dress (may be few times a year only).

If you add up roughly… all these costs end up to 1000~1200 per month (includes maid salary (450~550), levy (~170-~270), food ($100~$150) and lodging (room sharing per person is approx $300 in common room of hdb). Excluded medical feesa and 6 monthly check-up.

This is not a small amount.

Construction workers and workers on ship who toil on the open sun whole day, get something around this.

They have to pay their own lodging, food, medical expenses (if they exceed minimum cap paid by employer) and buy own clothing. Their actual savings may be even less than $200~300.

So you can see the benefit the maid are getting!
Pls do take note, I am not against maids when I am saying the above…
I really appreciated the few good ones who worked in my home…really had apleasant experience with them…

I do agree with most of you that maid levy should be abolished.

Just wonder why this is not in Govt's new policies to boost birth rate. 🤷

Maid levy should be reduced by at least $80 (compensate the maid $20 off day per week x 4). I find it's becoming so tough to employ a maid. For FTWM like me, maid is a necessity and not luxury!

:offtopic: but i could not help wondering if the opposition party could do a better job than the current MOM?? Will Low TK makes better policy to protect the welfare of the helpless employers..how come none of the MPs raise this problem in the parliament?
