Punggol East By-Election coming ? MP steps down
-
Once our area was in a 4 corner war. We very much wanted to give our vote to the opposition, but then, the opposition was really… Like promising free medical, no tax…all are which a rational person knows cannot be realized. So how, do you still want to give your vote to them or be a rational voter?

Remember when they first built MRT?
I sure did. JBJ was complaining about the costs of the MRT (5 billion, if I recall correctly) in parliament while Ong Teng Cheong was defending it.
So if we have got enough opposition members then, perhaps the MRT might not be approved? -

I don't begrudge you for anything at all. I just buay song you shooting every real concern down like how the miws do - 'noise'.
You can choose to believe whatever you choose to believe. I have written at length about my choice in another thread back in 2011, before the GE ballot, to the shock of many forumers.3Boys:
Your view is too one-sided. Everything that others highlight, you dismiss it as mindless and trivial complaints. I think the pilot and stewardess analogy is hardly an accurate one. Pilots only need to ensure the safety of the passengers. Why should I care if he can appeal to my basic needs? An MP is someone who should serve the needs of the people by ensuring that the country is run well. If the cost of living is suffocating the people while the MP is enjoying the high life, then something is wrong.
You can say what you like about your vote, but who knows who you really voted for? I find it hard to believe that you had cast in the opposite direction of your conviction.
My conviction is that the g'ment does a good job, despite the circumstances, and that people don't understand how hard it is to please everyone, and the necessity for hard trade-offs.
My conviction is also that the MIW plays dirty politics, which I detest.
They are 2 separate things and are not contradictory.
In my younger days, before I started working and developing a more sophisticated understanding of how the world works, the second issue was to the fore, I could not stand the MIW.
Now that I've grown up, I begin to see things in a different light. There are many redeeming features of the MIW policies, despite their awful politics. But LKY's comments about Aljunied did it for me. Unlike many voters, I think the current batch are far more suited to 'proper' political leadership in the new era than he ever was.
At any point in time, one may feel one way about one thing, then some other factors may come into it.
If you are cheering the 10+% swing in votes in PE (presumably MIW voters who switched camps), then why do you begrudge me the right to change MY mind?
The way I see it, just about every policy, especially those that have to do with monetary gains, directly or indirectly, is about serving their own interest - first. If it so happens to make a certain group happy, yay - we kill two birds with one stone.
If they truly deem Singapore transportation as being world-class, let them take mrt and bus to work - and I will believe them that it's really world-class.
If they truly believe that all schools are good schools, let their children attend a neighbourhood school. I will only believe in this make-believe if the ministers' children and grandchildren don't attend taonan, nanyang and don't know what other branded schools.
If they truly believe that their public housing is affordable and wonderful, strip themselves of their obscene paychecks, directorships and god knows how much allowances and live in an Hdb flat. If they do that, I will also believe that Hdb is affordable and fantastic.
If they truly believe that all educated women should be economically productive and should be working mothers, let their wives take a 9-5 job and earn our kinda salary, and leave their kids with grandparents or maids. Then I will be convinced that every educated woman ought to be an economic digit.
If they truly believe that foreign talents are beneficial to the economy and these FTs are top talents we can't do without, then let foreign talents take over their jobs and have their salaries, not ours. Then I will truly believe that they are wise and right.
The bottom line is: they should walk the talk. If they ever do, I'll ask everybody I know to vote for them.
And I think you are clueless about how blessed we are compared with other countries with far greater resources, and are ungrateful for the good fundamentals of country, including low crime, high employment, low national debt, safe schools, and education system that is highly ranked worldwide, and public transport, that despite the hiccups, is still one of the better ones in the world, and affordable to boot.
There.
I live in the same country as you. My children are in neighbourhood schools, I lived in HDB for 17 years, my wife works full time, I have a maid, until 2 years ago, my boss 2 levels up was a foreign talent. Granted, I don't take MrT much these days, but my wife and I share 1 car.
So, how is it my expectations and experiences are so different from yours?
I feel grateful and happy, you only feel disgruntled.
Simple question, do you think an opposition government can raise your standard of living? Hint, even LTK doesn't think so, because he will operate under the same constraints of finances, space and high expectations of Singaporeans. And when that day comes, and maybe you will get your wish soon, you will awake from your dreamland and perhaps understand, hmmmmm......maybe the PAP were right after all. -

Interesting post!!

I’m not ungrateful. Neither am I disgruntled. I just want the miws to mean what they say. Don’t shove what they treat as dirt to the people and say "Look! You’re getting the best!" when they themselves don’t even want it. I’m disgusted at how they boast about what they have done for Singapore. Gimme all the money. I’ll show you how everything can be solved using endless supply of money. And where does this endless supply of monies come from? If they had earned it from other countries, they are good. But we all know these monies come from the people’s pockets that are dug deep and big.
I’m disgusted when I learnt of how many connections there are in there. What meritocracy?
I’m simply disgusted by their fat pay while asking the people to be contented with what they are getting.
I have no fantasy or imagination about the opposition parties. If you realize, I have not mentioned anything about them.
Pap used to be a people government. But now whatever they do is clearly for their own interest. Why do you think they want to bring in millions of people in such a short span of time? Why do you think they want so many cheap labour?
I’m posting these not becos I’m uncontented with what I get in my life. You sound like I’m griping becos I don’t get this and that. Don’t be too quick to assume that people only speak up when they don’t get what they want. Perhaps you yourself are like this and so you judge others by the same measure. I just get the feeling that you are a pap supporter in disguise of an opposition voter and trying to propagate pap in the forum bcos you can be so surprisingly blind to the many injustices they have done to the people.
Continue to worship your civil masters.
Eons ago when I was in a GP class, the topic of bill Clinton being unfaithful came up and my teacher asked us,"How many of you think that a leader’s private life has nothing to do with his public life?" the majority of the class raised their hands and my teacher expressed great shock,"If the moral of a leader is not important to you, what kind of leaders are you going to choose?!!"
You know about their dirty politics, yet you support them. Now I know why my teacher expressed such concern. -
Good post! Rains!!!i totally agree!
For eg,when the mrt breaks down…govt just punish smrt by how!?
Fine them!!where the $ goes to?
Govt!!
But who were the ones inconvenienced & wasted their time+mayb also $ to take cab to rush to work?we citizens…
Are we compensated for our inconvenience & time wasted?no…
Can’t the govt instead of fine smrt, should make them reduce bus fares & mrt fares by say 20-30cts per trip, for say 3-6mths,instead of fine smrt?
At least then I feel govt is thinking of their people!!
But now…no…govt fattening their own pockets…
Same goes for maid levy!! -

I have never disguised the fact that I am PAP supporter, or that I propagate a pro g'ment position. Whether or not I voted for the opposition in the past does not change that. And I have. Believe it or not, it's up to you, my credibility does not lie with your approval.
Anyway, don't make a pretence of knowing my intentions, if you've read my posts you'd know I support tax rises on the wealthy to fund programmes, but in your world view, it's impossible for any supporter of the PAP to have a heart for people.
Continue in your delusion then. -

Sheesh, do you even read what I post before you rain away? Why did I vote against them last GE?

Only supporters of the opposition like you are moral people.
Insufferable arrogance.
