The Common Tests or Practice Papers are now over and the results should be out. This is the year when most parents begin to feel somewhat stressed, especially when the results of the first tests are given out. This is very true for the English paper. So when should parents panic?

If your child has always had a very strong foundation in English and is an avid reader, the difference in grades from P4 to P5 will not be very shocking. The range should be from 79 and above.

If your child used to get 85 and above in P4 and returns with a 69%, there is still no reason to panic. Here’s why. Many new components are introduced this year. Some have only been touched upon on the basic level in P4. School teachers have limited time to ‘drill’ their students in all the rules (for example in the Synthesis component). Learning how to spot contextual clues in the Comprehension Cloze component requires a great deal of practice. All of which take time and well…practice.

However, if your child returns with a 60 or below, then caution is needed. When the test paper is returned, write down the marks he/she received in each section of the paper (Grammar MCQ, Graphic Stimulus etc). Look at which areas your child is weak in. Is it Grammar, Vocabulary? Start to work with your child on these areas whether with Practice books or papers. The more familiar your child is with these areas, the better he/she will perform in the next test. Be very focused on Grammar mistakes. I have had students who come to me in P6 who are so weak in grammar that it is really a challenge to prepare them for the PSLE. Nearly every component of the paper requires a good grammatical foundation.

And get your child to read and read. I cannot emphasise the importance of reading at this stage enough. Especially the Home section of the newspaper and magazines such as Readers Digest and National Geographic.

Start working with your child as early as possible. The SA1 will encompass more than just the main papers of Booklet A & B. No better time than during the March holidays!

Hi yes you are correct, both shredding and shred is ok to use, if given as one if the options.

When either of these is used, the sentence makes perfect sense..

For you to use freeze as answer the sentence should have below structure..

During our science lesson, Miss Tan told us that water will______ at zero degree celsius

But for above sentence structure the answer should be \"freezes\"

                      It's like saying:

                      She \"runs\" very fast.
                      She can \"run\" very fast..

Hope you can see the difference in above 2 sentences..and understood the proper use of each word form..

Yes, should be "freezes" as water is uncountable so it is singular. Unless there is "will" in front.
