...... I have seen too many overseas grads having hard time landing a job, especially those pumped-money-grads. Perhaps those are not in sinoboy's radarsinoboy:
Good question. Not all overseas unis are equal. But in Singapore any kacang puteh university overseas degree from Europe, US, Australia is stronger than local ones, with the exception some protected segments like legal or medical profession.
Alas, you are seriously misinformed.
..... yet!

But I look at ranking for NUS and NTU not very the high leh internationally. Can't even find SMU. MP in parliament also a lot from overseas. Got local grads but those are doctors and lawyers. I confess that I didn't go overseas so I am not very qualified but these things tell me foreign better.sinoboy:
I also think you are misinformed. I worked in a few MNCs before. Only overseas scholars are regarded higher than local grads. Overseas self funded grads are looked down upon because everybody knows that they cannot get into local universities so they have to use mummy and daddy's money to go overseas.

But somehow overseas trained lawyer or doctor also regarded as more qualified over here.
You are mistaken. Those hiring in the big organisations know that there is a pecking order of overseas universities, and the university matters. Not all overseas universities are ranked ahead of local ones, and they also look at the 'A' level grades that the applicant got to get into the universities.sinoboy:
Again, it depends on the university. At the top overseas universities, many students there work extremely hard, not just Singaporeans or Asians, and Singaporeans are by no means the hardest workers or the highest scorers. Also a lot of people who experienced overseas education said foreign uni less stressful easier to compete because foreign kids don't study as hard so Singaporeans tend to do well even though they are mediocre back in Singapore.

Except those who go to the same universities as the overseas scholars and get the same as or better results.sinoboy:
Agree.

ngl2010:
Nowadays overseas self funded grads are increasing in numbers as some do not want to be bonded and families are increasing in affluence. I know of self funded overseas (not Mongolian) trained doctors and dentists who are doing better than local ones. Not because they are academically weak, just that your IP schools kids (which many may not be local DC) results are much much stronger. Interview into medicine stream here also favor certain A level schools. Yes I agree there are some timbaktu 'universities' that are actually equivalent to our polytechnic standard, but so far overseas grads i've seen do get a head start in general. So maybe I was not mis-informed, but I have mis-observed? :scratchhead:

hiii CK;
Perhaps we need to temper our observations with the fact that overseas scholars probably have more to prove to themselves and therefore work harder, which naturally means that they would seem to be more competent for that promotion. Unless, of course, we feel that they don't deserve the promotion because they are less capable than others?Joule:
...
and yes, I agree that really, especially in govt and stat boards, the overseas scholars get promoted first.
...
if you compare apples to apples, yes, I personally feel that some scholars who have gotten promotions were not as 'worthy' of the promotion as 'others'. This is my observation and personal view. However, I am not higher management and am a little fry in a big pond...but however...see the point below
It is also a fact of life that sometimes we feel this way even though the other person is, on an objective basis, more deserving that we are of the promotion.
life is generally unfair unless it is unfair in my favour, which then makes it 'fair'
In the government admin service, exemplified by military service, promotion is based on computed estimated potential (CEP). If an employee has been identified as a person of great potential, he will be placed on an accelerated career path, regardless of whether he is a local or overseas grad.
potential is not equal to performance. You can have great performance but your promotion is determined by your potential and performance, right? so if you are deemed to have 'little' potential....promotion rate comes slower.... but then again, who ask 'you' to neber study hard for PSLE and A Level?
ok ok, I'm whacking all over the place. Totally incoherent. Bad monday morning. see you people! :siam: -

You need to be incoherent more often
