Blue Pearl:
Hi any parents can share your experiences with CHIJ Toa Payoh and CHIJ Lady of Good Counsel. I am confused with these two options. Though Toa Payoh is nearer (within 1 KM) than the other, i find the Good Counsel (more thank 2 KM) small and conducive. What are your views.
Before we direct you anywhere, do you belong to Phase 2B or Phase 2C?
If Phase 2B, you can try CHIJ TP coz within 1km is quite safe. If Phase 2C, may need to ballot even within 1km.
For CHIJ OLGC, you are guaranteed at Phase 2B and Phase 2C so far if you are a citizen.
Standards-wise on average, CHIJ TP is the stronger one. But CHIJ OLGC also produces good students scoring 260 - 270. An ex-IJ TP teacher I know chose to send her daughter to OLGC coz she felt the gals at OLGC were better behaved. You decide. -
Tks cherry gal. I m under phrase 2c. I also head tat olgc girls r better behaved than ij. I want my girl to learn more gd values though academic is impt bit i feel values primary. That is y i m confused n torn between two schools diun knw wich to decide

Go for the one that gives you the highest chance to enter first. Other things can wait. Make sure u can get in first ! For now, this should be yr highest priority. Put yr leg into the gate first.

Do you think it’s better to let a child learn Higher Chinese in P1 or normal Chinese? Why? Can advise. Thanks

Agree, should go for the 1km one. The other one too far away requires balloting-higher risk. -
If I am in yr shoes -
I won’t bother too much whether is ij Toa Payoh or olgc. I make sure I choose the one that gives me the greatest confidence to enter first, lowest risk. Once I enter - later if I need to trsf to the other ij, then will do so later. But for now, get in first ! After all, is internal within one big chij family. -

I'm pro MT, so I embraced Higher Chinese, not becos of any perceived benefits but becos it's my MT.
Not all schools will offer Higher Chi in P1. Non-SAP schools that offer Higher Chi in P1 will offer to those who have better proficiency in the language. In addition, need to check the Chi textbk. If the textbk is normal chi textbk, I don't think it's really exactly Higher Chi syllabus.
Some schools select students for 深广 chi classes but they still use normal chi textbks. But there are schools, non-SAP, that select students for Higher Chi classes and they use Higher Chi textbks. These are at lower primary level not at the level where the student have to decide to take Higher Chi or Normal Chi, those who have a choice. So I'm not sure how non-SAP schools manage the Higher Chi syllabus.
There's a difference between Normal Chi and Higher Chi textbk. The 深广passage in Normal Chi textbk is different fr Higher Chi textbk.
Now that there's 3 levels of teaching Chi, bridging, core and sheng guang. I don't know where Higher Chi fits in at lower primary for Non-SAP schools -
