Some children outgrow it, but if it develops into a habit as she grows up, it can cause a lot of problems for her, such as TMJ. Ask your dentist what you can do about it; some would prescribe a mouth guard to prevent teeth grinding.

My DD, 8 yrs old, grinds her teeth during sleep almost every night. She sleeps in my room, so I know as I am a light sleeper. I am concern as it can get v loud- wonder if it will damage her teeth. More curiously, does anyone know why some pple grind their teeth when sleeping n how can I stop my DD from doing so. Advise, anyone? Thank you.

my DS did the same thing when he was 6-9 years old. Now he is 11 and he had stop doing that by himself without any treatment.

Nudging her to stop n gently "slapping" her to stop at that pt in time also did not help. Sigh…what if she still does not grow out of it by next year?

My dd also used to grind her teeth...doesn't anymore. She's 16. On the other hand, my dh grinds his teeth in his sleep!

My dh grinds hit teeth at times too. I think is due to stress.

My ds did that when he was 4 plus for half a year. I felt it was linked to stress so tried to address that.

Dh and his sister both did that, also linked to stress. It can damage the teeth, esp the molars, over the years. According to the dentist, dh’s molars are as worn as someone ten years older than he is. For adults with chronic grinding, a teeth guard can be worn to protect the molars from excessive wear and tear. It is possible to grind until the teeth are excessively short, but this take years to happen. The grinding can also cause headache and jaw stiffness during the day. The best is still to address causes of stress and tension. At one stage I would get ds to practise relaxation techniques before sleeping (he had a hard time sleeping).

Thanks Deminc n all for sharing ur exp. DD is a happy child n I really do not see any stress on her. Will try some relaxation exercise for her b4 bedtime n see how it goes. On a lighter side, when I \"complain\" about her teeth grinding ritual, she \"counter-complains\" that I was even nosier with my snoring
