C6 in RI
Yes, you can choose to do CL instead of HCL at RGS and RI. I'm not sure about NYGH and HCI.FantasyLandDreams:
Hi
I would like to check if there is option to do Normal Chinese instead of HCL , in RI, RGS, NYGH, HCI?
Or is it that HCL is compulsory in these 4 schools at Sec 1?
Also, I heard that O level track students will get 2 bonus points for JC admission for doing HCL? Please correct me if wrong? For IP students, no such 'benefit' right, perhaps only saving time of one year in JC1 to study other subjects instead, as I assume HCL O Level paper would already been taken at Sec 4? Not sure how the system works now as I have not been keeping track on this HCL in Secondary thingy.
Anyone can advise on the above? Thank you very much.
There's no need for HCL bonus points in IP. If you pass HCL at O level in Year 4, you can, depending on your grade, be excused from taking CL in Years 5/6. In RGS, you need to have passed HCL at minimum D7 (iirc) to be excused from taking CL at A levels. If you think you can do better, you're welcome to take CL at JC. The minimum grade to be excused from taking CL in HCI/NYGH in Years 5/6 is B4, I believe. HCI/NYGH parents would have better info on this. -
Thanks, jtoh and ngl2010.

Program outlines look all-encompassing. However, IP schools tend to supply their own notes (of similar content), so perhaps more applicable for participants looking to study in advance?

Sorry for the noob question… is the core curriculum offered by the respective IP schools similar, or are they free to design their own? Any difference between independent schools (eg RGS/NYGH) and government schools (eg DHS)?
-
Every school designs its own. However, the main content is really very similar as I presume MOE requires certain things. How lessons and acitivities are designed will differ, and school culture and emphases, etc will also differ. Most schools will have the A levels in mind as the eventual end point, and some the IB.

They all differ, in the way how they want to conduct, to teach their own IP curriculum.

The common A-level MOE syllabus is only there, serve as a guide-line only, but individual IP school have the autonomy as to how they want their ip students to carry out their ip project work studies, their practical IP laboratory work assignments, their weekly assignment worksheets, their activities (research modules), their own in-house talent development programme, their unique qualifying criteria, attachment research exposure / experience to nus department professors, to assist them etc.
Even if we don't bring in the independent schools like (raffles girls / nanyang girls), even amongst the government IP a-level schools themselves (eg. Dunman high, national jc, temasek jc, eunoia jc), the type of IP (individual / group) work assignments, can already differ, from one ip school to another.
Since IP schools open house are round the corner, suggest perhaps visit their open house, besides visit independent schools' open house : can ask the upper sec (3 and 4) to Junior college level (jc1 and jc2 level) individual subject teachers (staff), what they teach, what they cover in each semester, once ask them in greater detail, u may be able to feel the difference ...
E.g.
In lower sec 1, semester 1 : some IP schools prefer to teach integrated science , meaning inside one same term, every week, teach (bio / chem / physics), concurrently.
And then, when come to do science ip project -
Whether you want to design a science project, that involve both (physics and chem) application knowledge, or involve both (bio and chem) knowledge, or involve both (physics and bio), or involve all the 3 sciences together in the same project, it is up to you (IP student), to decide, which one u are comfortable with. There is flexibility.
Whereas, in another IP school, teaching staff may prefer : ok, for this term 1 (sec 1), let's teach physics. Come next term 2, let's teach chemistry. Come term 3 : then, teach lower secondary biology
Independent school fees : charge $300 Plus, per month. They can hire industry experienced staff, from external industry, to teach certain science topics , in depth. These teachers, hired from outside, are very experienced. As such, through their rich working experience gleaned (gained), sometimes they can share their working experience with these IP students, beyond their a-level syllabus. That's why, in some independent IP schools, many students tend to excel in certain, particular a-level h2 subjects. Very strong
Government IP schools -
students paid around $28, per month. Moe to deploy their own internal staff, to teach.
$28 vs. $300 plus school fees, is a big contrast. -
I agree with phtthp. I'd suggest, before going to open houses, to do a simple background check: (1) look up the Year1 subjects the school offers; (2) check out booklists (if not available, it probably means the school writes their own, then you can ask the students whether they find those materials comprehensive enough to ace exams); (3) research the promotional criteria (you can then ask the students for a general feel of how many of them tend to be retained etc each year); (4) & what upper Sec/A level/IB subjects are offered. You can learn a lot about the school culture & support system if you ask specific questions.

Hello. May I understand what are the assessment books for IP students? Or are there past year papers that we can get?

Mostly rely on own school's notes, worksheets and past year papers. Already a lot so no time to do assessment books at all. In fact, does not even touch textbooks.
