look, the science and math in Singapore schools are taught 100% in English

and even the higher chinese lang does not cover any technical terms used in math and science, so how do you expect the P4 / P5 kids to be conversant with math and science terms in Chinese ?? Put yourself in their shoes, can you do as well without translation ? how many of you know carbon dioxide and nitrogen cycle in chinese ? what is nitrogen in chinese ? do you know ? (I know of course)
Do they just do translation for the Math and Science questions?

I only watched 5 minutes of yesterday's episode and for those questions, I didn't need translation. According to the journalist's write up, she said \"even many of those SIMPLE questions\" required translation.

ok lah, my chinese not as powerful as you 😛 I only know carbon dioxide in chinese.

:!: OMG dimsum!!! My perfect image of these \"精英学校的最优良分子\".....just got smashed!! Based on translation??

If what you say is true....I am really sad.... 😞 Then why did they do this program in Chinese? :slapshead:
I think they want to copy 张小燕百万小学堂.

I don't know about the translation thing until the earlier post by a fellow forumer

the problem with the education is that all these terms are not covered in the Chinese lang books.....still want to talk about reducing weightage ... (luckily did not go through)

Duno leh. The journalist only wrote, \"..many simple questions also required translation.\"

I suppose the challenge is finding the pool of teachers to meet this demand will be a big headache and importing will be required. :faint:

Just wondering.....anyone has PRCs teaching Chinese in their schools now? I know for school enrichment courses outside curriculum time they do use PRCs teachers because they outsource it.

you may not be aware, some SAP schools are doing exactly what you are suggesting.....except that there is no additional Chinese lessons for Math & Science

yes there are PRC ex teachers now in some pri schools in SG

So not all SAP schools practise the same thing? Can list the SAP schools doing that? Wonder why there is no standardisation since they belong to SAP schools?

My DS Chinese Teacher asked him to go, at first he is very happy but when he comes to know that he will be on National TV, he chicken out even when I scold him for being so chicken.

Sigh, I will go if I had a chance.

though they are SAP, they are not run by the same committee for all SAP schools....some carry the chinese culture at higher profile, some has to be the standard bearer, some trying to cope along .....
