On the point of Singaporean (including me who is born and grew up here) being no good with the Chinese Language, I have to fully agree.

The standard is really low even with current HCL standard in Primary School.

Unlike our parents time when they are the true blood Chinese School CL1 students, their Chinese Language command is good, even up till our time the CL1 has already drop quite a lot, now even worst.

This so call \"Cream\" in both Chinese Language and Culture, when they go China or Taiwan, they will know how bad their deficiency is.

You may differ with my opinion, but I will not change my stand.

Perhaps what you said have some element of truth but I am still very baffled.... How come during our time it is called second language but now called HCL but standard lower? Yet many children are struggling with a lower standard? :? So the children are not smarter these days, they just shift their time to learn more of other subjects and less of Chinese? tio bo?

I think so leh. cos the Maths and Science standard is definately higher then our time... and my time is so long ago!

:!: OMG dimsum!!! My perfect image of these \"精英学校的最优良分子\".....just got smashed!! Based on translation??

If what you say is true....I am really sad.... 😞 Then why did they do this program in Chinese? :slapshead:

I think they want to copy 张小燕百万小学堂.

And 百万小学堂 got the idea from I'm Not Smarter Than A Fifth Grader.

not only must the kids be able to know how to solve the questions, they must be able to read and understand chinese in the first place (in this instance, i am looking forward to the performance of SAP schools cos their Chinese standard should be higher)....and in the first place, it is not easy to get 30 students in the same school with the same high/acceptable level of chinese proficiency level to solve chinese questions as well as science and math knowledge to tackle that section. MHO.

as for the rules, did the sch get to keep the $$ that the 'soldiers' guard?
          Catholic not SAP school?
          There were 36 students ...

            小兵迎大将 is more like 挑战101.

The difference is 小兵's gatekeepers are 36 students while 挑战101's are 101 adults.

it is not easy to get students who are proficient in mandarin (36 of them somemore) to be just as good in upper primary maths and science. given that most of the chinese celebrity will be opting for chinese language questions and that upper pri maths and science are the best shot by the sch to retain the prize money, if i am the head of sch and given the choice of sending students who are proficient in mandarin but not so in others, i would have sent those who are good in primary maths/science despite needing the translation.

              MHO. 😉

they should adapt the same for English variety shows. 😉

The questions tonight were simple. I didn't watch last week's so don't know if it was the same standard or not. It wasn't difficult to understand the question in Chinese.

Only one girl was left at the end of the show.

Some of the questions asked include (not in order):

                      1. When is Earth Day?
                      2. What is the country of the flag shown? Supposed to be India but Diana Ser's answer was Cambodia.
                      3. A Chinese idiom that described a person as being meticulous and able to spot oblivious clues. Four choices were given and participants were asked to pick the correct idiom.
                      4. A boy has some some apples. His mother split the apples into half, and divide the other half equally among the boy and his three cousins. What is the portion that the boy get eventually?

Just read today's wanbao. A journalist was at the recording scene. She didn't explicitly mention this progamme name. Apparently, alot of the questions needed to be translated to English as the participating pr. school students couldn't understand the questions posed in Mandarin! She was really appalled at their low chinese standard. Quoting from her column, \"本地学生华文水平的低落, 让我叹为观止。而且,这些已经是来自精英学校的最优良分子。\"

According to her, the recording which probably could finish in 3 hours took 6-7 hours to complete due to the translation process. The TV crew kept reminding her not to write this out as it's \"太丢人\". She wrote (in Chinese), \"On the TV screen, TV viewers only saw the gracefulness and elegance of the swans but for her and the rest present in the studio, they saw the feet of the swans struggling hard under the water. The real truth, often needs to be covered up\".

                        😢 Sigh! Sad...
Haiz... that's why I always feel that those who are proficient in Mandarin are at an advantage. whenever I meet chinese journalists, they can ask questions in fluent English, and you KNOW that they can read/write/speak 一口漂亮的华语。Pick any English journalist and you know they are not even at half the level of Chinese fluency of the Chinese journalist's english fluency.

Which is why I used to admire my friends who took LEP in JC. Esp since most of those I knew took both english and mandarin lit at A level and some even S paper level. SO Bilingual. *jealous*

I suppose that is the inevitable fallout from the fact that the lingua franca is English. Win some lose some.
