      ks2me:
My understanding of English tells me 'thousands', 'eight thousands' or '8 thousands' or '8000' should be acceptable for both questions. Is it necessary to go so granular?

Yes, English is so common-sense, but Maths is not. If the answer required is 'thousands' and you write '8000' or even '8 thousands', it's wrong.

        Dharma:

If you have a number 98765.

1.\tThe digit 8 is in the thousands place.
2.\tThe place value of digit 8 is 8000/eight thousand/8 thousand (normally advisable to write the number in numerical form)

        Thanks Dharma,
        So 1 answers \"What does digit 8 stand for?\"
2 answers \"What is the place value of digit 8?\"

        Hey no,

1 answers 'The digit 8 is in the _______ place'.
(By your definition, it should be 'What is the place value of the digit 8?' if 'place' and 'place value' mean the same thing.)
2 answers 'What does the digit 8 stand for?' or 'What is the value of the digit 8?' ie. 8000
        This I'm very sure.

I'm just not sure what 'place value' exactly asks for ie. '8000' or 'thousands'.

            Hi rains,

            Finally answering(!),

Place value refers to what PLACE the number is \"kept\" in e.g. thousands, hundreds, tenths etc.

                There are 11 units of female and 3 units of male workers. 11 - 3 = 8 units more female than male. Since there are 16 more female, 1 unit = 16 divided by 8 = 2. 1 unit = 2 workers. Total units of female and male is 11 + 3 = 14. 14 units = 14 x 2 = 28 workers altogether.

                    Hi Daddy,
                    Female workers = 11 units
                    Male workers = 3 units
                    Difference = 11 units - 3 units = 8 units
                    8 units = 16
                    1 unit = 16/8 = 2
                    11 units + 3 units = 14 units
                    2 X 14 = 28

                      Hi,

I converted 3 2/3 mixed fraction to 11/3. Why 11 = to female and 3 to male ? Still not understand. Thanks.

                      The answer is corrected.

                        Hi Daddy,

#You are correct in converting the mixed number into improper fraction in order to see the relationship between the female and male workers.

What we understand by the statement “The number of female workers is 11/3 times the number of male workers” is that the ratio of female to male workers is 11: 3. In other words for every 3 male workers there are 11 female workers.

                        So, if
No. of female workers = 11 units, then the no. of male workers must be 3 units.

Knowing this, we are given the difference in the no. of female and male workers in the factory. (i.e. 16 more female than male workers)

                        11units – 3 units = 8 units = 16
                        1 unit = 2

                        Total no. of workers
                        = 11 units + 3 units
                        = 14 units = 14 x 2 = 28
