Apologies it's pg 902 of '2011 PSLE discussions and strategies' thread, not this thread. Below is one of the posts.

      Tough Cookie:
Hi. A friend's son who has been admitted to RI through a sport DSA was told this morning that he has to buy a different set of textbooks from the rest who scored above 240. Why so? Does it mean that the school is preparing these weaker students for 'O' levels?

Dec 11 ST: ‘Raffles Institution said it was looking into starting an O-level class. Principal Lim Lai Cheng said that if this happens, it will be ‘to open up options’ for those wanting to go to polytechnics or abroad.’

Well, we all know that RI does not have an O level class now. We are just wondering if the different textbooks in 2011 batch for certain DSA kids are gearing towards preparing some kids for O levels in case they cannot cope in RI.

I was told by the center which my DS is trying to do DSA with, I was told only those DSA sport who do not hit the basic DSA sport COP will be posted to the 4yr programme. Must be told in the first place right ? Think the sch do not want to loose the sport talents just because they may missed the COP just by a mark or two.
          Interesting Info ....
Do U Happen to Know what is the \"basic DSA sport COP\"?
          240?

The programme is called E W Barker Scholar Programme for those who have COP below 240. Those 240 n above will do IP route. But if they do well in sec 2 they will be transfer to IP so some boys will still go thru this DSA sport route even if they have to go for the 4 yr programme first. This programme will be v good for those real sport talents as it cater to their trainning n learning needs.

ok, so I can still shake leg.....until nearer the time....anyway, only plan to DSA 2 -3 (one cos' he likes Maths, the other cos' nearby 😉

                Hi BeContented,

Which schools are your son trying out for? I guess NUSH is one of them? If you have all your son's relevant certs in a file it's not stressful to put together his portfolio. 🙂 Just make certified true copies.

                Hi jtoh,
Yes, considering NUSH cos' of the Maths and it's not that far cos I'm staying in Jurong. The other school is of course RV but worried about the HCL. Not sure if DS is really keen to do it in Secondary.... Actually I would prefer to go via PSLE t-score, but I think DS is probably in 24x range.......

And thanks to you, Funx3 and all the rest for the info on what needs to be done. Didn't realised have to be certified true copies.....too long never do all these stuff already (did that only when I applied for my first job 20 years ago 😉 )

DS did not submit 'certified true copies' of his certs, but just photocopies of them, when he applied for DSA last year. I was the one who prepared DS' portfolio file, so I remember.

The 2 schools DS applied DSA for were RI & HCI. Not sure of other secondary schools, though. Perhaps you can check with the respective schools before you submit the certs?

This is an interesting development bec many sports students opt for RI bec of its IP programme. If they're by default in an O level class they may not want to DSA into RI.
Jtoh, that is true. For a sportsboy, it will be non-different from ACSI or Victoria etc which have dual tracks and one can only enter IP route if meet IP COP of min 255. But those who want the RI brand will still go RI. Having a O levels class may in fact benefit those boys who are clearly not coping by Year 2/3 in IP but no exit route under current system. At least going forward, they have an O level cert to fall back. It also goes to show the school does look after them.

Yes it's good that RI is looking after all its students. I'm sure it always has.

Just to clarify, for ACSI, sports DSA boys need not have met the IP COP of 255 etc to be in the IP class. So long as they do well enough in the HAST test they will be admitted to IP regardless of their PSLE scores.

Are you talking about this? The EW Barker Institute of Sports? http://www.ri.edu.sg/main/EWBISConf

From the New Paper write up it appears to be a sports school of sorts with sports-related disciplines. I remember being confused by the article when I read it last year bec it seemed to be a separate school with different curriculum and emphasis.
