My DD's teacher corrected the OE Question last year and the exact answer given was need plants water, air, sunlight and nutrients to stay alive.Hi,
Appreciate someone can help on the following question:
Which plant W,X,Y,Z will be alive after 2 weeks?
Plant W has air, water n sunlight ( no nutrients)
Plant X has air, sunlight n nutrients (no water)
Plant Y has air, water n nutrients (no sunlight)
Plant Z has air (no water, sunlight n nutrients)
Ans (1) W only
(2) X and Y only
(3) W and X only
(4) none of the above
Should the answer be 1 or 4? Answer given is 1.
In the Ultimate Science guide, it states 'Plants need water, air, sunlight and nutrients to grow'. So not sure do I need to take nutrients into consideration as I understand that basic need of plants are air, water n sunlight.
Also some books will just states plants like all living things need air, water and food to survive. So if in open-ended question like 'what do plants need to survive.' What should be the appropriate answer?
Thank you. -

Yes, I saw the same info about banana (no seeds) somewhere and some parents thought banana has seeds. Thank you for bringing this again. May I know which book you took this info from. I saw this info in one of the books I have but can not find the exact page now:(

Don't want to negate or reject anybody's answers above..(upto each individual what you want to take as the correct answer to: banana has seed question)
But to be truthful, all fruits have seeds (unless modified by man to get the seedless variety).
Wild bananas have very large seeds which make then unfit for human consumption. so in past, man only cultivated banana varieties which have smaller seeds (seen as dark speckles or dots if you see the cut cross-section of the banana at center). and this variety is what we commonly see growing all around us.
Thats why it seems like the banana which we buy from fruit shop and eat does not have seeds (but the speckles at center are actually seeds in non-reproductive form as these cannot be used to reproduce/grow banana plant). This variety of banana will of course grow by using shoot reproduction method.

kindly see the above link which has good explanation (of course better than mine
) and also has pictures of wild banana cross section showing the huge inedible seeds...
But in exams how to write the anwer needs to be checked with teacher though.. I am not sure if the science text book actually talks anything about this..
To me, I will do highlight all relevant points about banana seed to my kids so that they can keep an open mind about things.. -

I do agree with you that wild bananas have large and hard seeds but usually in local context, the culinary banana that is commonly eaten are seedless fruits.Don't want to negate or reject anybody's answers above..(upto each individual what you want to take as the correct answer to: banana has seed question)

just thinking how the child should answer if the question just says bananas???
makes me go bananas actually.. :rotflmao:
If this makes me crazy, how will kids behave.. :nailbite: -

Answer: Yes.happyheart:
Extracted this question from CHIJ CA1 question 18. There is a picture of a plant that requires students to identify the parts.
The answer state singular term like flower, root, leaf and stem. Would it still be acceptable to name the parts in plural term as flowers, roots and leaves?
Thanks.
Thank you. -
Hi
Can someone pls help me with this que?
2 earthworms are placed in a dish. Half of the dish is covered by a piece of cardboard and the other half is covered by a glass sheet. The dish is then placed under a light source. After 20 minutes later, the earthworms can be seen under the cardboard. What conclusion can you draw about the behaviour of earthworms in this experiment?
Thanks in advance. -
Earthworms, like all living things, respond to their surroundings. They like dark places. So it respond to the light source above the dish by moving away from the light towards the darker side of the dish where the light is blocked by the cardboard instead of under the glass sheet which is transparent and allow light to pass through.
How many marks is your question? If one mark, probably my first sentence suffice. -

Only 1 mark is allocated for this question. From yr answer, the Behaviour of the earthworms is actually asking for the Characteristic of living things? This is the part which confused me. My ds said answer is earthworms like dark places will do since the question is not asking for what characteristic of life will the earthworms show in the experiment?
