Ni NatTif Mummy. Congrats! Is your girl from the GEP? Is her DSA via Academic or CCA? Did NYGH call you or have they updated the web A/C? Did she attend any interview? Which school is she currently at? Is she the 'Top-Of-The Cohort type? Hope you can share with us. Just wish to know the profile of someone NYGH is looking for. Thanks.

Hi! Yes, my gal from GEP, not 'Top-Of-The Cohort' type. I received email from the school and the web already updated the status. She went to the interview last week as she missed by 0.2pts to gain direct admission without interview. She chose the school as she is interested in their Bi-Cultural programme and likes Chinese, some of her seniors are there and I guess quite a no of her sch mates will be there. It's just like an extension of her primary sch, she feels comfortable there. The interviewer commented she shows confident in herself and she did very well in her CCA. Another of her GEP friend went for a 2nd interview, was accepted as well. At first we were thinking of applying via CCA, but she decided not to as she doesn't want to be 'binded' for 4 yrs

OIC. How many marks must those in GEP got before they can skip the interview? Were you inform about this criteria? My son was from last year's GEP cohort. All GEP students have to be interviewed. They probably find it tiring to interview them, confirm them, just to lose them to RGS wen it was time for them to exercise their option. Is your daughter from NYGH's affiliate school? Do you have any idea how many places NYGH intends to allocate for DSA?

Yeah true. Most people who get offered by both schools often end up in RGS (Annoying but what to do.) RG does have a very different culture from NY though; NY is more rooted in Chinese values (certainly not Cheena though) and imo more friendly and nuturing. I still stand by interviews though; it's a better indicator of who a person is instead of relying only on grades.
I took HCL in Primary School (no surprise, I come from a SAP school) and actually, I think the lowest I ever got in Chinese was a B4 (bad IMO since I was getting A1s for everything else). It was terrible, I didn't like the subject because I couldn't really write or express myself well and I'm a slow reader. Essays and compres were quite horrible, I failed some of them. It took a lot of pushing from my teacher to maintain an A grade xD It's seriously managable.
I think I've said it before, but I'm in favour of scrapping of affliation (not likely) or raising our admision standard for NYPS. As a non-affliated student, I think it's terribly unfair to the others and also drags down our school's standard. Academics aren't all but that doesn't dismiss the fact that other more academically deserving students are denied over sentimentalism.
@Nat-Tif Mummy Haha I was from BSP too! I didn't apply for the scholarship though because I wasn't sure whether I wanted to do China Studies in JC, especially with my poor command of Chinese. Good thing too πŸ˜›

Yes, What is more surprise is that even students who are PR from China prefer RG to NYG. This is what I gathered from some parents; my child's schoolmates and also some of the forumners here. According to one mum I know, her daughter does not need to be in a 'Chinese' environment because coming from China, they have enough exposure to the Language & culture. What they prefer is the more 'western' culture in RG! 😐

It's the same preference for RI instead of HCI. A neighour's son who hailed from Shanghai opted for RI instead of HCI too.

              Hi NatTifMummy,

Is your daughter taking HCL? I know most of the HCL girls got offered direct admission without interviews. What was the cut-off point?

For her friend who went for 2 interviews with NYGH, was she also taking HCL?

              Thanks.

My student from RSS applied for DSA by sports, now passed the sports trial, passed the GAT and did her interview this afternoon. Hope she is successful. Even if her DSA is successful, her PSLE is still of paramount importance.

Hi, I will provide as much info as I know:
                  - GEP students with abt 80% no need interview this yr for NYGH, do not know abt other sch
                  - yes, all GEP students in her sch- NYPS (NYGH's affiliate school) take HCL
                  - in NYGH web site already stated- interview if necessary for Academic/ Leadership (Non-GEP)
                  - refer to http://www.moe.gov.sg/education/admissions/dsa-sec/faqs/
~ Schools with Integrated Programme (IP) or Specialised Independent Schools (viz. NUSHS, SOTA, SST) can take in up to 100%

                    Hi NatTif Mummy

Thanks for sharing. Much appreciated. Must be such a relief for you and your daughter to have a confirmed place in her preferred school. Did she apply to any other schools?

More & more of my daughter's friends (mainstream) have already received calls from NYGH informing them of a confirmed DSA place!
