Just curious, do your dds much into the NYGH confession thingy?
U mean the FB confession ?
Quite a surprise reading some posted their confessions over HCI guys ..... -

Hi Rains, I am a sec two student in nanyang and for your concern, the main classes are 101 the AEP class and 109 the hmp class. And well, indeed the classes are grouped into the order as 103,112 and 113 are classes for the stronger students. For this year's Sec one batch, 112 and 113 are both gep classes and 103 is the SBGE class (sch based gifted education). However, for 103 is being grouped by the PSLE score, there are definitely more talented girls out there in other classes who can excel too. So, still, as long as sufficient efforts are being put in, whichever classes does not matter at all because in Sec two, its the streaming year where you get the choice to go to SMTP, HP, BSP, triple science or double sciences classes in sec three based on your academic results in sec twoJustOneStudent_100:
HI guys I'm in NYGH Sec 1 and although it is only the start of secondary sch life, things are getting really stressful. Almost every week, there are graded quizzes, graded assignments etc. maybe we just have to accept this fact and not be so marks-conscious. Only then can we not b stressed abt graded tasks. Esp I'm in 103, which is like the bilingual class (stronger in languages) and also one of the PSLE top classes and the teachers' expectations of us are higher. As for teachers, i'm rather shocked that the tchrs in ny are actuallly biased as up till now my teachers are still relative caring and kind.As for the stressfulness, I rem what my geog teacher( who was an Ny student) told us during the first lesson: I do not see 30 students but 30 rubber bands. I am here to stretch you but not let you break.
Hi Justonestudent,
Do you mind sharing how you come to know that 103 is a top psle score class and a class stronger in languages?
My kid does not seem to know anything. When I asked her if her class has any salient characteristic, or which class is the hmp/aep/gep/top/sports class, she says she got no idea as 'all classes are mixed'!
But it seems to me that there are groupings of students of different strengths from this thread. -

Indeed, sometimes hearing may not be the most truthful perspective of view. As a student in Nanyang, I can proudly say that nearly all teachers are very caring and helpful. Whenever I feels overly stressed or have any queries, the teachers would even sacrifice their lunchtime to have a talk/tutor time with me. Some of them even provide free after school tuition for certain students if required. Probably the marker case would be that the student was being overboard by talking in class too frequently (trust me, it is very frustrating for their classmates and teachers who are trying to concentrate) and the teacher was more of being in a bad mood that day. Or even, this whole case may be exaggerated or rumored only.
From above sharing, :-mdm wenjuan:
Nanyang is stressful(to my dd). And the teachers are somehow biased:( I heard from my girl that there is this student, she is always disliked by teachers.
I heard, this student was once talking in class and the teacher suddenly flew into a rage n threw a whiteboard marker from the front of the class to all the way back. It wasnt only that student who was talking so i guess this is a case of prejudice:(( The marker was broken due to how hard it was thrown and i was told it flew extremely near to the student and in fact, almost hit her, luckily, she dodged.
I was as traumatised as the student when i heard this from my dd. firstly, how can a teacher throw a marker at a student. I was as traumatised as the student when i heard about it. Apparently, the student, who used to love math class in the class started to dislike it unfortunately.
I always thought that nygh was a very good school and sent my dd there hoping that the influence she got would get her to improve dramatically in her studies as well as character but in the end, the teacher is such a bad example... I really regret my decision on allowing my dd to go to nygh. That school has also caused her suffer heavy school workload.... Haizzz, im really at a lost of what to do.
First of all, if above allegation were true, a/k first hand experience, you should directly approach school ; if it is 'hearsay', take a pinch of salt; we all have our shares of \"good\" and \"bad\" experience in any schools. But certainly, if teacher mentioned above is NYGH, the management team should look into it;
Secondly, the IP schools, especially schools like NYGH, are expected \"stressful\" with \"heavy workload\" and much less \"spoon feeding\". At the first place, it was our responsibility to help our children to choose the school that suits for them, not suits our ego. If you find NYGH is indeed too stressful, again, approach to school; Madam Heng has mentioned many times, the school will help you to transfer more suitable school for your dd. Don't take it badly, but rather, the better suited school means the happier school life.
Thirdly, we, (most f us) are parents of DDs in NYGH, should help our dds to adjust and enjoy their education in NY. Let our sharing be of good suggestion, good encouragement, or of any resourceful information, as this forum has been always offered. We should refrain ourselves to just vent our negative feeling which helps no one. -

My dd has told me that those malicious comments were made by two students and not parents. Those two girls with serious attitude problem were blacklisted by the teachers. Therefore they vowed to smear the school black. The matter was made known to the school and the girl/girls were given a good scolding by one of the teachers. I believe they were asked to take down the comments as well. So parents and prospective NY students, do take all these negative comments from the web with a pinch of salt. Biased teachers? Let's be realistic. Is there a place on earth that such thing doesn't exist? In fact my wife and I can't be happier with the extra miles that the teachers are putting in for the students. Some teachers make it a point to come in at 7am everyday, wait for students who need help at a designated place in addition to the remedial lessons that they provide after school. -
Thank u, eagerdad for above sharing. There are always some of these kind in any school. Overall, the teachers in NY are caring and nurturing, in fact, I don’t mind a bit if my dd meets a fierce teacher, so far, I find all her teachers are “too soft” with these girls.

Just wanna share that some teachers are quite strict and insist that the girls change classs seating positions every term. Reason is so that the girls are forced to mix with new partners etc… Some girls who prefer to sit in the front are forced to move to the back, while those who prefer the back might be forced to move to the front.
While this re-arrangement every term might have its merits, however, it causes undue stress to the girls, esp if they are already accustomed to their seating positions for the past term. This kind of stress is unnecessary as it just adds to the burden of the girls. Stress might have an effect on their ability to concentrate in class.
Somehow I feel that our Sec 1 girls are being treated like Primary school kids. NYGH should not forget that they have passed the Primary school phase and should be treated more like young adults, and not be so regimental in the management of the Sec 1s.
Any comments from parents ? -
I understand this is the school’s way of helping the girls to bond and to get to know more classmates better. Leaving the girls to find their own deskmates invariably leads to cliques being formed, which usually results in the shyer girls feeling left out. My dd felt having new deskmates each term helped her to make more friends, because she was the only one from her Pri Sch in the class. What’s more, she even became good friends with girls who, on the surface, didn’t seem to have much in common with her. But after 10 weeks of sitting together and discussing school work helped break the ice and they realised they do share many common interests, and they’ve now become close friends!

Not a parent, but an alumnus. I would say that it's a good thing really. Being forced to switch deskmates each term means you get to know other people. My teachers did that I think and even though I'm not that close to most of my former deskmates now, I appreciate the opportunity to get to know them better. I don't think I'd have interacted with them as much otherwise. Being able to interact with others is a very important social skill that the girls need to pick up anyway.Just wanna share that some teachers are quite strict and insist that the girls change classs seating positions every term. I can't exactly imagine there being \"a lot of stress\" just because one moved a couple of seats. I changed seats (and classrooms) regularly for lectures and tutorials in JC and I wouldn't say I felt \"stressed\" because of it. As long as I could hear my teacher, see the board and participate in the class, it was all good. Of course, if you have terrible deskmates that's pretty awful, but then you learn how to cope with people you don't like. Again, a very important (and useful) social skill! If it's genuinely very bad, then maybe they should request a mutual swap.
I agree that they should be given more autonomy but perhaps the teacher just wanted to ensure that the girls mixed around rather than just stuck to one group of friends. Especially since they're in Sec 1 and so new to the school and (most of) their classmates. I think by Sec 2, if not upper Sec, you'll find that the teacher leaves you to your own devices re seating arrangement. -
may i know what type of question will be ask in the GAT for Nanyang? how many question and the time allocated for the test?
thank you.
