Sometimes, trembling hands, fast heart beat, weight loss (if the situation is hyperthyroidism). After it has been brought under control with simple drugs (over a 1 year period), there is likely to be weight gain of perhaps 5kgs, unless the person eats and exercises moderately

Need some advice urgently on your experiences…

Having hyperthyroid. Also having cancer and needs operation but surgeon worried about the thyroid storm when put under GA.

Have been on camazol 5mg for 2 weeks. Starting on camazol 15mg + atenolol 50mg for the next 2 weeks to determine if index gets normal. Was told may still need to wait if 2 weeks later reading still not normal.

Have anyone encountered such case before? Feeling despair as the date for op keeps postponing without an end to it…

              Any advice?

Thanks Schootopia. Hopefully cancer can wait for that long without deteriorating. Anything else that could be done, for example, food to take to speed up the process of correcting the hyper thyroidism?

                Thanks.

                  my father has hyperthyroid.
strangely after my father had stents to clear the blockage in his heart, he needs to take thyroxine :?

T4 and TSH is really hard to balance. he will be seeing the endocrinologist in 2 weeks time to know the result and if thyroxine is required on a long term basis.

like what grownupbaby mentioned, listen to the doctor. he knows best.

Hi, For hyperthyroidism, there's no food to speed up the correcting process (a fren is an endocrinologist) so to speak. Generally you can do whatever you normally do, but if you really want to do something specially, you can try avoiding foods rich in potassium like seaweed. The important thing is more of NOT missing your medication. Get a pill box. If you do forget, the doc would have advised you to take the missed dose once you remember, even if it overlaps with the following dose, I suppose? Thyroid storm IS very dangerous; otherwise thyroid is non-threatening. Yup, our forummers are right, listen to your docs. Adjusting the dosage could take 3 to 6 months' time, since everyone's body reacts differently. Yoga is recommended by this doc fren for destressing. Get well soon & remember not to forget your medication.

Have been waiting for almost 4 months since the first discovery of the cancer. And also found the hyperthyroidism just before the op. Previously only TSH is low. The wait is long…

Wondering if anyone also has the similar encounter with hyperthyroidism but could go under GA… or really have to control till normal to go ahead with the op… Thinking of those people who have thyroid problem to remove their thyroid gland… how did they manage to go for the op? Didn’t they also need GA? no thyroid storm?

My understanding is that Thyroid Storm is more for hyperthyroidism; without functioning thyroid glands which becomes a case of hypothyroidism it's actually much easier to manage - just have to be on lifetime replacement. My understanding as well is that RadioIodine is administered to \"remove\" the thyroid gland so to speak. Think of it as being a nuclear victim. This simple procedure is controlled & can only be performed at I think SGH? Talk to your docs again then. Take care.
