or
take triple pure Science and 1 combined humanities ?
As Bio is a content heavy subject, most sch set minimum criteria for kids who want to take triple science, to ensure that they can cope.
Some schools do not encourage taking both geo & history so if a child is not interested in lit, then not much of a humanities choice there, except some coursework subjects.
Having said that, Olevels results can still be a surprise.
can share, which is the most content heavy, amongst these 3 ?
Pure History = Core (or Full) Humanities, not the half 50% content \"Elective\" humanities[/quote]Will be quite hard-pressed to find anyone who took all 3 to make a fair comparison. That's why interest and aptitude is important to carry one through the choices made. -

It also depends on how an individual studies - students who rely more heavily on memorisation will find any subject more onerous than students who rely on selective memory work plus reasoning. And those who memorise selectively will not necessarily do worse than those who memorise more. Also, interest will make help more facts \"stick\" without intentional memorisation.

(because not all schools in Singapore, offer Triple Sciences) -
most schools offer Total 8 subject combination, including
the compulsory combined \" Social studies + Elective Humanities together by SEAB\", counted as 1 single subject, overall combined.
To take
Total 9 subjects at Upper Sec 3 level,
it is offered only to outstanding students @end of Sec 2 streaming, who have the ability to show that they are able to handle (manage) the \"above-norm\" requirement.
If include taking 3rd foreign language
(Spanish / French / Japanese / German), as well, Total will be 10 subjects.
8, 9 or 10 subjects is a far cry, from PSLE 4 subjects.

definition of Triple Sciences :
Pure Physics
Pure Biology
Pure Chemistry
\"Elective\" humanities -
covered 50% (or half) of the \"Core\" or \"Full\" Humanities subject matter content

FAQ
(Frequently asked question)
What is the worst case scenario ?
What happen, if a student took
Triple Sciences +
Elective Geography (that accompany Social studies),
and say,
scored C6 (Elective Geography) In L1R5,
can this student, when go up to Junior College, take H1 or H2 A-level Geography ?
To answer,
need to check the pre-requistes for Geography, inside individual JCs.
Some JCs stated -
No pre requistes required whatsoever, for Geography. In this case, even if the student had scored grade \"C6\" in combined Geography (under Elective Humanities, together with Social Studies), Yes, student can still take H2 Geography, inside this JC.
\"C6\" is the lowest passing grade, before \"D7\"
But, if those JCs stated otherwise that certain pre-requistes are required, before can take H2 Geog, one need to check carefully
Social Studies is compulsory -

who are taking
special talent-skilled subject, in certain designated schools hand-picked (approved) by MOE,
E.g.
AEP (Art Elective Program) / MEP (Music Elective Program) \"stand-alone\" core (full) Humanities,
that will enable you to take all the way, straight up into Junior College (JC1 level), even after your O-level,
here is the break-down (detail), of Total 9 subjects combination, if take Triple Sciences
at Upper Sec (3 & 4) level, after the end-of-sec 2 streaming exercise -
1)
2 languages
(English + Higher Chinese)
2)
2 Maths
(Elementary Maths + Additional Maths)
3)
3 Sciences (ie. Triples Sciences)
Pure (Chemistry + Physics + Biology)
up to this point here, reach Total 7 subjects already
4)
the compulsory Social Studies +
\"Elective\" Humanities (can be History or Geography or English Literature) combined together, counted as one single subject, #8
5)
AEP or MEP, is subject #9
6)
If students take 3rd foreign language
(Spanish / French / German / Japanese), this will be counted as subject #10
===========================
note
Maximum, Total 8 subjects taken for Triple Science students, is the norm, in most Secondary schools.
This include O-level students in,
example
(Cedar Girls', Crescent Girls, Anglican High, Nanhua High, Maris Stella High, Chung Cheng High) Secondary schools
only outstanding students @end of Sec 2 streaming exercise,
who prove that they have the ability to manage (handle / tackle) the \"above-norm\", are allowed to take Total 9 subjects.
If students wish to take #10 subject (3rd Foreign language),
students need to seek (obtain) approval from their respective school Principal / MOE, first
because
schools do not want students to take so many subjects, get overwhelmed by the heavy burden school work-load, in the end cannot cope, didn't do well, affect (impact) their overall L1R5 score, to
enter Junior Colleges / Polytechnic.
====================
Btw
AEP / MEP and 3rd foreign language, are mutually exclusive.
For those few, special designated schools that offer talent in AEP / MEP, normally they won't let students take
- AEP with 3rd foreign language, or
- MEP with 3rd foreign language
because
AEP / MEP itself, are already very heavy in content
There had been past cases, where students appealed to drop out of AEP / MEP, before reaching the end-of-their-Sec2, cannot cope. What more, when more new subjects (eg. Social studies) start to come in, at Sec 3 brginning.
Whether appeal to drop can go through or not, MOE will evaluate (consider), case by case basis
The lesser number of subjects students take, the better they tend to perform at O-level National exam, because
they have more time to study, more time to prepare, more time to absorb or \"internalize\" (digest), per subject inside their L1R5 -
For IP students,
Social studies not compulsory, newspaper reported

This was 2016 - has it changed? In any case, although it may not have been compulsory, my guess is that most schools would have had SS as a subject, which would be compulsory within the school. Doesn't MOE make National Education compusory (i.e. it's got to be worked in somehow)?
For IP students,
Social studies not compulsory, newspaper reported
https://www.straitstimes.com/forum/letters-in-print/equip-teachers-to-handle-social-studies-class-deftly
I believe that the writer of the letter was assuming that because IP students don't have to take O levels, they didn't have SS as a subject at all. That isn't the case. At least in my daughter's sec school, they had SS for all 4 years. -
For students taking HCL, triple science and double Math, are they considered as 9 or 10 subjects?

HCL is subject #9, not 10th
For students taking HCL, triple science and double Math, are they considered as 9 or 10 subjects?
Example
If you are an O-level student taking Triple Pure Sciences, and if also take HCL, means
a) 2 languages
(English, Standard Chinese)
b) double Maths
(A Maths, E Maths)
c) triple Pure Sciences
that is,
Pure (Physics, Chemistry, Biology)
Not Physical Science
Not Combined Science
(up to here, reached 7 subjects already)
d) #8 subject is \" combined \" humanities
that is,
compulsory SS (Social Sciences), must lump together with an \"Elective\" Humanities subject (eg. Elective History / Elective Geography / Elective English Literature)
e) #9 subject is Higher Chinese
f)
optional #10th subject, if also take
- 3rd foreign language (Spanish, German, French, Japanese, at MOELC). Only the Top 10% of the entire PSLE cohort, qualify to take 3rd foreign language, depend on each cohort performance. Usually, hover around Tscore 252 minimum (fall within Top 10% PSLE cohort), + or -, depending on each PSLE cohort performance.
Or
- take Malay or Bahasa at MOELC
Or
- take MEP (Music Elective) or
take AEP (Art Elective)
Or
- take another \"Core\" humanities subject as #10, over and above the earlier \"Combined\" Humanities.
ie.
take
\"Core\" History / Core Geography / Core English Literature, for some Top O-level students who are targeting \"Humanities\" scholarship later on, when they move up to A-level Junior College
note
students need approval from their Secondary school (or Moe), if student take Total 10 subjects, because school ensure that students are able to handle the workload, before approve student to take the 10th subject.
If a student is already struggling with 7 or with 8 subjects combination, \"dying\" from the study work load, school won't approve 10th subject.
==========================
But nowadays, usually schools encourage (double pure Sciences, double Humanities) subject combination, at EOY (end-of-year) Sec 2 streaming, so that
- when move up to JC level, advantage is, you have an extra, another choice of Humanities subject, since you have already done it at O-level, before.
========================
What's the difference, between \"Elective\" vs. \"Core\" humanities?
\"Elective\" humanities, cover only 50 % content taught, inside \"Core\" humanities. Can compare & contrast, the detailed SEAB syllabus -
