Problem is all the local unis do not have a lot more courses that could be relevant to the future economy of singapore.

We continue to have to send kids overseas to pursue their interest or other courses not offered by nus, ntu, smu, sutd.
I guess, in a small country with few universities, it can't be helped. It was even worse in the past. Sometimes, kids will have to go with a 2nd choice if the course they want is not available in the country and they can't afford to go overseas. It's the same for those who can't get into the first choice even if it's available in the country. Sometimes, they may be able to find an alternative route by working first then getting sponsorship, saving up to do a postgraduate course or whatever.

We have to find something in Writing in SG...

Journalism is the obvious one, I guess. There's also copywriting for websites, magazines, e-zines, mass comm, PR etc. Not too sure of the scope, but I would say that if she can get into university, she should do that and build a portfolio of her writing on the side. University training, if she can get in, is still a good thing, in my opinion. If she doesn't get in, that's another story (which will very likely be my daughter's). There's a English course in NTU with a minor in creative writing, I think.

Thank you. NTU with Minor in Creative writing Sounds good ... there is also a very good institute with name of donor in NTU. Have to target these

I think our universities have pretty much covered all its bases. Sure, we could get a boost in the humanities. We don't have courses in Anthropology, Archaeology, PPE, comparative religion, library science, international relations etc. But one must ask if we really require graduates in these fields.

Say because of our small population, we only need 20 graduates from each of these specialised and unique courses. But we still need to hire an entire department of say 15 professional lecturers and researchers in one university just for this small course! Which is not economically feasible at all.

The number of researchers and lecturers in a department does not decrease linearly with the number of students. Say if 50 faculty members can teach 500 students, it does not mean that 5 faculty members is enough to teach 50.

What time do we need to report to jc? The reporting date is 2 feb or 30 jan? What can we expct when we go there? Do we need to bring o level results? Is it ok to bring parents there? Or will it be awkward to bring parents there(if there are no other parents)

You can check out the JC website for info. Most should be reporting at 7.30am. There may be info like how much or what to bring. Don't need to report with parents. There will probably be some talks and orientation activities.

If your child receive the posting notification via sms, then it should be stated in the message the date and time to report to the school.

Up to the child to decide if she wants parents to go with her. Why awkward? No right or wrong. Some parents maybe want to take a look at the school, have a word with teachers etc.

Myself will just be dropping dd off. She will just bring pens and note book.
