A level got bell curve thingy?

British A level assessment moved away from norm-referencing ('bell curve thingy') in the late 1980s. Now it is criteria-referencing, that is, meet the criteria and you get the grade regardless of the performance of the rest of the cohort (at least in theory).
seaglass, here it goes.

##A: 70% and above
##B: 60% to 69%
##C: 55% to 59%
##D: 50% to 54%
##E: 45% to 49% (passing grade)

Thanks GG! 🙂

That's what I thought too... but from what havoc_ex has shared, it sounds more like 70% percentile, so I got confused...

Dont think its that Singapore sets the bar too high. Nobody actually gets to 'set the bar'. The bar to enter uni and to get good A-level grades are actually set by students' themselves. If there are more bright students, the bell curve shifts and its harder to get an A. If there are more bright students applying for NUS/NTU then it is naturally harder to get in.

A level got bell curve thingy?
Yes, got bell curve for local A levels.

so local A levels has bell curve. UK A levels no bell curve. TioBo? So their A may be equivalent to our B. Our A is their A*?

It's a bit more complicated than that. In order to determine the fixed criteria for criteria-referencing, assessors in the first place look at the bell curve across several years!!

It is an open secret that A levels in the UK have fallen somewhat into disrepute, especially since the changes introduced in 2000. Most commentators would freely concede that Singapore A levels are more rigorous.

Top British universities are aware of this, of course. That is why private schools in the UK are increasingly ditching the A levels for other 18+ exams such as IB. Cambridge University itself introduced its own alternative called the Pre-U Diploma. To apply for coveted courses, the top universities require applicants to sit exams such as BMAT and LNAT. Oxbridge lays great emphasis on interviews.

BMAT is only meant for med/dental & vet courses. There is also UKCAT.

In recognition of the tougher set of A level papers chosen by SEAB, some uk uni do offer a slightly lower grade requirement for SG students for non quota courses. Instead of AAA they may allow AAB

Yes... it is optional. Most JC will be giving 3 weeks leave from 12th OCt to prepare... CJC has another exam starting same day.

A level starts 2nd Nov
Do most CJC pupils wanna to take up the optional second Prelim exams ?
Only for selected subjs which one picks or for all subjs ?

i think i rather choose NOT to have it...as it will be too draggy n too exhausting for the pupils to take 2 Prelims exams ...esp it is so near to the A level exams...which starts on 2 Nov...

The duration of 1 prelim examinations can drag for almost a month...imagine 2 prelims plus the actual A level eams...oh No... 😓

Dear Experts, Parents I need your help. As a worried parent I am requesting your help.

My DD scored 256 in PSLE. She went to MGS for her O level she got (14-4)10 points. I put her in JC. Exempted from Mother tongue because she had Higher mother tongue in O level.

She took Science stream in JC.

Friday her school teacher called me and informed me that she wants to meet me because she did not do well on JC1

Her score as follows

Chemistry 40% fail
Maths 57%
English 59%
Biology - Fail may be 30%. on her exam date she was sick and took MC. School said they will not conduct exam again.
Economics 46%

I told her her grades are falling from Sec 1. I asked her why JC1 she did not do well. She said she want to study but not motivated to study. She always sits with books and reads. never goes out with friends. But she says nothing goes inside her mind. She goes for maths tuition.

I know she was spending lots of time on Mobile/whatsapp/youtube/facebook. he friends communicate with her over whatsapp for all project matters. So we made a rule that Mobile can not go inside bedroom/study room. Always mobile has to be near TV. whenever she wants she can take mobile and sit in sofa and see. This brought the mobile addiction little down.

I do not know what to do? Should I ask her to re-take JC1. or School will promote her and and see the performance in 1st term and decide? Or should I take out and put her in Poly next year. I am confused and worried. My daughter also depressed and worried. Kindly help me with your advice and suggestions. Appreciate.

Thank you

Hi nancy27sg

Would you like to discuss with your dd’s form teacher as what would be the most appropriate for your dd?
In addition, what is dd’s preference in studies?
