No, she will not be disadvantaged if she took 3 years to complete JC. It still depends on whether her A level results meet the minimum admissions criteria to the respective courses at the Uni.Thank you zbear. Thanks to your DD. My DD is from JJC
I am not sure how to motivate. Anyway I am meeting my DD's teacher and update you the outcome. Should I take my DD to some psychiatrist or any motivational coach?
So the best option is to retain in JC1 right? Do we have any option enroll in JC2 and after first term if grade is not good then join JC1? I don't mind putting her for tuition for chemistry and bio.
In case if she repeats JC1, after JC2 if she apply to NUS or NTU or SMU, will it be a disadvantage because she took 3 years to complete JC?
Thanks
Talk to her teachers to get a sense of the next course of action. Your dd is probably just as confused now. Have a talk with her and let her know that you are there for her.
Am not sure how much help a psychiatrist or motivational coach is of any help. May be a good idea to contact the school counsellor for help. Counsellor wd be able to liaise with the teachers and have access to your girl's school records, and may be in a better position to help. -
Thanks everyone for your constructive inputs. I appreciate all your suggestion. I feel better relieved after seeing all your feedback.
I will meet the teach and update you the outcome soon.
Unlike MGS, JC they will not disclose how a student is performing compare to the cohort. There is no percentile in the score card. I will try to speak to her teacher.
Now after moving the mobile phone and putting restriction she is better. She may be bit worried because my hubby lost his job. It is almost an year and unable to find suitable job. Now I asked him to take any job this may be partially affecting her. But overall my DD is good in character and care for others. So hopefully retaining in JC1 will be good and reduces the stress. One year in whole carrier is nothing of big deal.
Once again thank you all

May I know if the grades stated are raw or already moderated?Dear Experts, Parents I need your help. As a worried parent I am requesting your help.
My DD scored 256 in PSLE. She went to MGS for her O level she got (14-4)10 points. I put her in JC. Exempted from Mother tongue because she had Higher mother tongue in O level.
She took Science stream in JC.
Friday her school teacher called me and informed me that she wants to meet me because she did not do well on JC1
Her score as follows
Chemistry 40% fail
Maths 57%
English 59%
Biology - Fail may be 30%. on her exam date she was sick and took MC. School said they will not conduct exam again.
Economics 46%
I told her her grades are falling from Sec 1. I asked her why JC1 she did not do well. She said she want to study but not motivated to study. She always sits with books and reads. never goes out with friends. But she says nothing goes inside her mind. She goes for maths tuition.
I know she was spending lots of time on Mobile/whatsapp/youtube/facebook. he friends communicate with her over whatsapp for all project matters. So we made a rule that Mobile can not go inside bedroom/study room. Always mobile has to be near TV. whenever she wants she can take mobile and sit in sofa and see. This brought the mobile addiction little down.
I do not know what to do? Should I ask her to re-take JC1. or School will promote her and and see the performance in 1st term and decide? Or should I take out and put her in Poly next year. I am confused and worried. My daughter also depressed and worried. Kindly help me with your advice and suggestions. Appreciate.
Thank you
I ain't sure but such scores are rather average in the lower ranking JCs as many are struggling to obtain a pass. Some students are able to do well in CT1 and weekly tests but not in EOY exams. It may not be possible to gauge accurately if the student is indeed very weak in performance. Can give the benefit of the doubts?
Personally, I feel that if she is promoted to J2, I will advise her to proceed to sit for the A levels. I would prefer her to repeat J2, if she can't make it to her choice courses in local Unis, rather than to repeat J1.
It may boost her confidence more if she's particular about being labelled as a' repeat student' or a 'JC dropout' (though it's not the case). Aferall, she scored very well for PSLE.
Sign her up for chemistry and bio group tuitions this holidays instead of studying alone and thus not feeling motivated. I am sure there are some good tuition centres in the heartlands which conduct small group revision and J2 preparatory classes.
Usually the reputable tuition centres are cramped with tutees from top JCs and lessons are conducted in large groups, of higher difficulty level (may dampen her morale) and more expensive.
Your DD sounds like an introvert to me. Do you encourage her to chill out with friends? Some parents will discourage their DCs esp if they aren't performing well in school.
Coming from a top girls' school with a decent PSLE score, her self-esteem may be low. Perhaps she feels that her hard work on O levels aren't rewarded?
Her adjustment in co-ed JC now may further aggravate her.
If yes, you have to keep encouraging her. -

I am so sorry to learn about your DH's plight. Yes, it will definitely affect your DD in some ways. I do not think your DD needs to consult a psychiatrist or counsellor. Your assurance should suffice. Thanks everyone for your constructive inputs. I appreciate all your suggestion. I feel better relieved after seeing all your feedback.

My DD's friends from AJC, CJC, TJC, YJC and ACJC (raw scores) are getting worse grades than your DD this EOY. Somehow, they are confident they will be promoted after moderation is done and assessment marks are added.
Don't worry too much. -
S & U grades at year one promos is not end of world to require seeing a psychiatrist. May be the parents need it more than the kids. It is a known fact that the year one promo is the first wake up call that honey moon period is over and time to stop dreaming. Next wake up call is year two mid year. By then must really panic if the grades are still in the red.
Yes assurance is important and must take stock what is causing the non performance.
If need to re do year one so be it. What is one extra year in a whole life perspective ? -
nancy27sg:
That's strange. DD's JC does reveal the percentile for each subject. I think that is quite useful for the child to guage where he stands, how much extra effort he needs to put in to buck up, etc.Unlike MGS, JC they will not disclose how a student is performing compare to the cohort. There is no percentile in the score card. I will try to speak to her teacher.
