Thanks starlight. She prefers Science. She is not good at memorising all history. I really do not know should I embark JC or pull her out and put her in Poly next year.

I told her her grades are falling from Sec 1. I asked her why JC1 she did not do well. She said she want to study but not motivated to study. She always sits with books and reads. never goes out with friends. But she says nothing goes inside her mind. She goes for maths tuition.
I know she was spending lots of time on Mobile/whatsapp/youtube/facebook. he friends communicate with her over whatsapp for all project matters. So we made a rule that Mobile can not go inside bedroom/study room. Always mobile has to be near TV. whenever she wants she can take mobile and sit in sofa and see. This brought the mobile addiction little down.
I do not know what to do? Should I ask her to re-take JC1. or School will promote her and and see the performance in 1st term and decide? Or should I take out and put her in Poly next year. I am confused and worried. My daughter also depressed and worried. Kindly help me with your advice and suggestions. Appreciate.
Thank you
Are her study methods effective? Or her foundations for the science subjects not properly laid down during secondary school days, causing her unable to grasp the JC subject contents?
better check out with the sch teachers exactly the causes of the failing grades, then can find the effective solutions.
If foundation is weak and not resolved, routing to Poly won't help. -
Thank you Jeniffer for your feedback.

Dear Experts, Parents I need your help. As a worried parent I am requesting your help.
My DD scored 256 in PSLE. She went to MGS for her O level she got (14-4)10 points. I put her in JC. Exempted from Mother tongue because she had Higher mother tongue in O level.
She took Science stream in JC.
Friday her school teacher called me and informed me that she wants to meet me because she did not do well on JC1
Her score as follows
Chemistry 40% fail
Maths 57%
English 59%
Biology - Fail may be 30%. on her exam date she was sick and took MC. School said they will not conduct exam again.
Economics 46%

I asked my DD who is in JC2 regarding your DD n she said the grades are not really that bad that it's beyond hope. If its in the range of 20%, then it's very serious.
Which JC is your DD from n do you know how the cohort performed overall? It's more accurate to measure your DD' s performance based on cohort's performance to have a better gauge on your DD's problem.
DD suggests that your DD repeats JC1 n not go to Poly.
However, both you n your DD really need to work on her motivation. Studies will be more manageable if she is able to find ways to be motivated.
Hope this is of some help. -
Thank you zbear. Thanks to your DD. My DD is from JJC
I am not sure how to motivate. Anyway I am meeting my DD’s teacher and update you the outcome. Should I take my DD to some psychiatrist or any motivational coach?
So the best option is to retain in JC1 right? Do we have any option enroll in JC2 and after first term if grade is not good then join JC1? I don’t mind putting her for tuition for chemistry and bio.
In case if she repeats JC1, after JC2 if she apply to NUS or NTU or SMU, will it be a disadvantage because she took 3 years to complete JC?
Thanks -

My daughter isn't in JC yet, so I have no direct experience. But I have heard from friends that it is not uncommon to repeat JC1, and there is no disadvantage in applying for university places.Thank you zbear. Thanks to your DD. My DD is from JJC

As others have said, the motivation issue is more serious, I feel. She has to want to do the course and be determined to study. Do talk to her teachers as they will probably have the best feel of what are the main issues. Perhaps you should also ask her to see the school counsellor? -

your dd is not the first that i've come across who entered MGS with high tscore but did not perform as expected at O levels. Your dd sounds like she has issues with mobile addiction. You've also detected signs of depression in her. Probably these must be addressed first before anything else can work.Dear Experts, Parents I need your help. Perhaps seeing a psychiatrist / counsellor can help for this. Forget about motivational coach if her problem is depression.
Regarding her grades, you could ask to see her percentiles, i.e. where she stands in comparison with the general cohort. Usually the percentiles is found in the Term Report. If her academic foundations is weak, pushing her to JC2 is not going to help. JC2 flies by very quickly and the first half of the year is spent trying to complete the syllabus asap.
As for transferring to poly, if it is a course suitable for her, that is a viable option. Polys face a different kind of stress fr JC.
Hope your dd snaps out of her depression with help. I'm seeing more JC students falling into depression lately. -

First of all, you have to see how she's performing against her cohort. That will give you a better gauge of her performance. If she's in the lower decile, that would be a cause for concern.
Next, you should talk to her teachers and to your daughter. What do the teachers advise in terms of whether she should be retained, promoted or would she do better in poly? What are your daughter's views? Is she not interested in the subjects she's doing in JC? If so, are there any courses in Poly that appeal to her?
Most JCs would have a re-test for students who perform badly in JC1, to determine if they should be retained or promoted. See how your daughter does in the re-test and take that as a guide to your next move. The important thing about JC is that your foundation in JC1 must be strong. Things move along very quickly in JC2.
Consult your daughter. Ask her opinion. Why is she not motivated? -
Hi, anybody can intro me a good bio center. DD JC1 promo result is really bad.
Thought of signing her up to JC1 revision crash course during Nov/Dec holiday.
Any to recommend.
