same for my kids, by ranking (bei fen).. only to my angmo relatives, that they usually just say, just call me aunty/uncle ( see, i also call her aunty/uncle and now they tell my chilren to call them aunty/auncle too)..in chinese, they should be \"lao ko\" cos is my father's sister. so i call \"ku ku\" , my children will add a \"lao\" in front.. something like that

prefer the old fashioned way of calling relatives otherwise my kids and future grandchildren will not know the difference betwwen all the different uncles, aunties, cousins, etc.

also prefer the chinese version because it shows the difference between the relatives on the mother and father side.

What about husband's cousin? Also address the same? What to address husband's niece and nephew?

Standard ones are auntie and uncles. Those around the same age just call names.

husband's cousins are his 堂兄弟姊妹(with same surname)/表兄弟姊妹(with different surname), so your kids will address them as 堂伯伯(elder male cousin), 堂叔叔(younger male cousin), 堂姑姑(all female cousins)
Husband's niece and nephew are of the same 'rank' as your kids. So is indirectly your kids' 堂姐姐, 堂妹妹, 堂哥哥,堂弟弟

agreed with LOLMum. I'll make sure my kid address all 'uncles', 'aunties' and cousins in their correct ranking in chinese, even some of them said, just call uncle, aunty or name. 😛 😛

This is another effective method of teaching chinese in our daily life 😉

                    :?

So many \"names\" to remember for my child. Why can't we just stick to calling auntie and uncles? Seems very confusing. Even I am confused. What does you call the cousin of mother's side for chinese?
\"Aunties\" and \"uncles\" works for us. Better than \"oi\" or \"errrr...\".

For relatives, I am particular about my kids addressed them.Only my friends, are they allowed to call uncles or aunties. Afterall when we see stranger, we also called uncles/aunties so we prefer the kids to know from young that these are relatives and family.

In our family, we try to call the elders the chinese way … my children cannot remember especially those we see once a year during Chinese New Year, and I am confused too, but we try. It is Chinese tradition that I would like to upkeep, we are losing a lot already …
