For relatives, I am particular about my kids addressed them.Only my friends, are they allowed to call uncles or aunties. Afterall when we see stranger, we also called uncles/aunties so we prefer the kids to know from young that these are relatives and family.

      I respect that 🙂

I mostly learnt what to call who from this \"家族歌\"

:goodpost: I am very particular about that too. No such thing as \"Auntie\" and \"Uncle\" for relatives. Those terms are for friends. My younger boy calls the elder brother \"kor kor\" too, no such thing as address by name where we are concerned.

          Please help with this....

I address my father's elder sister's son as 表哥. How should my children
          address him? 表伯 or 表舅??

We thought it should be 表伯 since he's my relative, but my 姑妈 said it's 表舅 since he's her son?? :faint:

              This is how I remember:
              if they don't carry my father's surname by blood ties, then it's 表 哥, 舅, 妹,姐...
              If they do carry, then it's 堂 哥, 伯, 妹, 姐....

Think there's no such thing as 表伯?

              Hope I'm right

I have never heard of 表伯, think should be called 表舅… but thought 表舅 should be for mother’s side?

Haha… what if we are teaching the wrong thing to children…

Years back, my mom-in-law insisted my dd greet

my DH's brother and his wife as ah pek and ah mng,
                  much to their annoyance. :x
I could empathize with them cos
they were only in their early 30s then.

10 years on, no complaints. 😄

So you're agreeing it should be 表伯?

                      Yes...agree it does sound....unusual.

That's what we thought too...that 舅 belongs to male relatives of the mother's side.

                        Hence the confusion. 😉
