Advice On School Student Care or Nanny

As far as I know, there are not many upper primary kids attending student care.Hi Mummies
Need your advise on to place my Pri 5 girl at student care or nanny?
Currently my girl is taken care by a nanny who had taken care of her for 10 yrs since baby time. Due to some personal issue will like to place her in student care to save cost too as nanny fee is at $600 per mth. But in dilemma feel student care environment is not so homely and meal provided is not so good as well. Feel my girl will not get used of it. Furthermore, my girl is not keen to go student care rather stay at home alone by herself. But we are not comfortable to let her be at home alone too.
Any mummies got such situation and advise what to do ?
Thanks.
From what other parents tell me, they placed their kids in student care from P1-3. By the time the kids reach P4, most will stop already. Firstly places are limited and priority is given to the lower primary kids first. Secondly the upper primary kids have so many after-school lessons and CCAs, your money paid for those few short hours is not worth already. Thirdly they are old enough to go home themselves and da bao or cook their own lunch, sit down to do homework & revise on their own already! Just get a home landline for you to call her & make sure she’s fine. Or vice versa for her to call u if any emergency. She is probably reluctant to attend student care because she will be the only P5 there and the rest are more childish. -

Both of my DCs were in school-based student care throughout the 6 years in Primary school. As zac's mum has mentioned, there are not many upper primary kids in student care and the supervising staff may not be the nicest of people. Meals provided may not be all that delicious and there may even be some compulsory activities such as nap-time or group games that they have to attend. It can be a pretty noisy environment so self-discipline and focus will be important. The pros are that it is a convenient supervised place they can go to after school or CCA and we wouldn’t have to worry about them being alone at home. For your P5 girl, it will be quite an adjustment for her to get used to student care if she has never been to one. Especially in these 2 years leading to PSLE, you may want to think twice about making the change at this time.Hi Mummies

Hi ning, sharing experiences....Folks around most often opt for (1) family member, helper, or some reliable adult to supervise after school. Otherwise (2) Student Care. (3) If left alone (worst case scenario), they would install some form of cctv at strategic locations within the home, & check these regularly (that is, several times a day, every other hour), plus ring up the kid...

Things are tougher if there is no adult oversight of the kids between 1pm till 7pm. If that is the case, I would rather the child goes to a student care center than be a latch key kid.
