What can we do with errant teachers? To complain or not to complain?
One of my DS’s subject teachers is a pain to the boys. We are talking about bright boys who want to learn. Whenever one of them asked a question, the teacher either went to the wall and ‘banged’ his head expressing his disgust / shock or scolded the student ‘bodoh’ causing much embarrassment and bewilderment. This has been happening with different boys. My DS told me that some of these questions were good ones. The teacher is thus unpopular. My DS dislikes the subject because of this teacher’s personality and behaviour.
The boys ended up looking for answers in the Internet and sharing the info in the class Facebook. I feel sorry for these boys. -

I suggest you get together informally with some other parents of boys in that class and craft a firm but gentle note chronicling these incidents. Address it to the Principal and the appropriate year directors.
Some of the younger or less developed teachers may not understand that what they're doing isn't called education. One should always respect one's students, especially if they're trying to know more.
Regards to you and your fellow parents! -
Some questions regarding the HAST test for DSA and selection for IP at year 2.
Is the same level of test being used ?
Or is the primary HAST test used for DSA and secondary school HAST test used for year 2 ?
Is it the 3 tests package involving compre, math and abstract reasoning ?
Or involve creative writing as well ? -

The HAST test is applied differently at all levels. A good summary of the test can be found at this link: http://www.acer.edu.au/tests/hast-secondary .
The components are listed there, and other links lead to other useful pages.

Neurotic Ramblings:
Notice that ACS(I) is not one of the schools mentioned anywhere in this article. So it is tangentially related only. Maybe ACS(I) is 'elite' in a different way.Parents from 'Elite' schools should read this...

Hi Autolycus
There's a paper about 2 years old that you can download from http://nk11r10-homepage.mac.com/WebObjects/FileSharing.woa/wa/2007TSLNIBDPFInal.pdf.pdf-zip.zip?a=downloadFile&user=brythain&path=/Public/2007TSLNIBDPFInal.pdf. It's PDF, about 300+ Kb when downloaded. Enjoy.
My DD is in P6 this year and we are comparing the IB and the A level track. I'd be most helpful if you could share this pdf.
TIA. -

Hi appreciate some info and advice. My son is in y2 and managed pretty decent results for midyr ie above 75%.
How wld Hast, cca achievements, yr 1 results weigh for y3 ip consideration?
What kind of gap wld there be between a new and other existing ip students who is used to accelerated learning in y3? Dont want him to feel demoralised at bottom of class.
How do xpress students entering ip y3 fair in perform?
If he is not as strong in eng and literature, wld it advisable to remain in xpress?
How many ip places will be offered to acsi y2?
Tssss! -
really informative. Thanks. Keep posting

zannelee:
Should be around 80+% to be comfortable in the IP. Year 1 results have no weighting, and CCA achievements will have little weighting (unless relevant to the IB in Year 5). There will be some gap, but demoralisation is a function of the character of the student and his family/peer support interactions.Hi appreciate some info and advice. Express-stream students entering the IP fare well, but that's because the bar is set high enough in the first place. If he isn't strong in Eng/Lit, it is advisable for him to develop those skills because they are essential for further development in any future career.
IP places are easy to estimate (you can't predict the exact number in advance). Count how many IP classes there are in the existing Y3. Multiply by 32. This gives you a rough limit on how many students will be in next year's IP. Since this includes Year 2 IP students moving up, the remaining places are far fewer and would also include a few imported scholars and transfers from other schools (quite rare).
Hope this helps! -
Ts much for the info and advice!

Does anyone know what the Khoo Yang Tin Scholarship is about? I heard my friend's son got it last year. Thanks in advance

Hi! The ACJC/ACS(I) Y5/6 or JC1/2 scholarships are generally the same:

ACSI is a good school. If your son can get into the school. Go for it!

Hi, can anyone share what’s the cut off point for acjc as well as acsi (entry to yr 5 IB)?
If my ds does well enough for o level, should he even consider going the IB route or the a level route? I was told by one parent that those students who joined acsi yr 5 after o level generally do better than the IP boys because the IP boys are to so trained in the same intensity (exams). Any views on that? -
South African:
ACJC and ACS(I) are both somewhere around 6 points now. If your DS does well enough to go for the O-level route, that's fine; bear in mind however that he will then need to do well to get into ACS(I) IB, because there is no automatic entry from the Y4 O-level cohort.Hi, can anyone share what's the cut off point for acjc as well as acsi (entry to yr 5 IB)?

All IP schools have an interesting problem with lack of tough exam practice (since cutting down on exams was the main point of the IP schools). Research has shown serious differences between IP and non-IP intake at RI and HCI. However, remember that the non-IP intake would have been the cream of the crop, the best of all the academically 'best' applicants. For the IB cohort at ACS(I), this difference is not significant at the final output. -
autolycus
could you elaborate a bit more on the “serious differences”. sounds interesting.
