RE: The Alternative Story (TAS) - Discussion
hquek:
I think quirkymum has fleshed out the teaching method already. Don't expect kids to turn out one compo a week, they may only do parts of this or that. The lessons already very crammed and in all my years there, I can count with my hands how many times my kids were released on time. I think it's more important for mine to learn how to approach different topics than to write the entire compo - need to prepare for the unexpected. Also, some teachers are more lax on the grammar/spelling in compos - I am fine with it because story first, grammar and spelling will fall in place eventually. if any parent cannot take it, then better not to consider them.
Hi quirkymum + hquek can shed some more light on the technique for compo? I hear it's quite strong.. but abit here abit there from different people. Hoping for more insight. TIA!daphlau:
Yes I find compre and grammar and synthesis important. That is why I send my kids to their regular classes. If they do not master these segments, it will be hard to do well overall in PSLE also.
They are v structured in their teaching of these components and you can also get the answer booklet which comes with the answers and rules and explanations. It is v useful.
For compo, my eldest used to be in a centre where they will encourage the kids to come up with their own plot and phrases first and then they will mark and then give out the model compo. It may work for some but not for my kids. They do not have the phrases, or even if they do, they do not use them aptly and their plots do not really make sense all the time or the plots are not fleshed out well. So always a lot of re-writing to do. For TAS, they will guide with the plot and phrases esp when they first start or in lower p (as I can see from my second one's case). They will use the model compo to teach and then from there expand the learning. In this way, I see they learn the phrases and also the ways to flesh out the plot and then eventually they are taught how to apply them to other topics. There is no one way to learn I guess, have to see which way suits your child.
TAS offers trial classes - payable; so make use of it if you are an interested parent. You should have the chance to talk to the teacher after the class is over to understand their methods.
Thank you this was helpful.. agree that the story is important because I always get feedback from the teacher that my child goes out of point. :? -
RE: All About Preparing For PSLE
I have been wondering.. How do they mark PSLE compo for both english and chinese? Is marking a subjective thing? Or are there fixed things they look out for (to award marks).. Have heard many thoughts about this also but wondering if anyone could give an inside view.. crossing my fingers :xedfingers:

RE: What's the purpose of Life?
I am quite happy bringing up my child… hopefully they will find more purpose than their mummy. I am contented doing this.

RE: Jiang Education Centre - Discussion
cafemug:
I would like to find out too. Should my child have a certain standard before joining? Just worried because both father and I don't speak the language at home.. have heard good reviews about Jiang.Hi, I would like to find out about the centre at Fu Lu Shou. I heard that most of the teachers are very passionate. I personally went to look at the materials for Primary 3, the staff was very friendly and she showed me all the printed materials the school use. The materials are indeed advance but i find a little disorganized (I was a little overwhelmed just looking through the books).
Just wondering, will the teachers be able to cover so many things in the lesson? Also, I'm also a little taken aback at the huge class size (18 or 20 students per class if I heard correctly). Do the kids show improvement after attending the lessons? -

Do you have a good agent you can trust to handle the viewing? My agent was my friend so I just left the keys with her...I must get hubby to agree to get a housing agent to sell the present flat if we manage to choose a reasonable unit.
Since late April until now, I have been very stressed out. If I have to handle the selling of this unit and renovation at new place, I will definitely fall sick before moving. Hubby can't possibly take leave each time there are people viewing. -
