Hi thanks for the info!
Actually, my daughter has difficulties in:
1. Exam techniques (she will spend too much time on one question, esp. in Maths. And if she encounters a question she doesn’t know she will start getting frustrated and cry).
2. She is very weak in Maths - her basic arithmetic e.g. division is quite ok but she struggles with model based questions.
3. She is easily distracted. If she doesn’t like a topic, e.g. Maths, Chinese - she will listen to you for a while, then start wandering around and losing focus.
She recently got 48 for Maths in school (she is Pri 3 this year) and is causing a lot of worry for my wife and I.
She is likes Science and she thinks is is good in it. Her grades there are average.
English - she struggles with vocab (her vocab is very weak), comprehension she reads quite a number of Disney storybooks. Her grammar is still ok.
Chinese - she struggles with comprehension and also Chinese vocab.
She is also very reliant on her mom. If her mom is not there, she doesn’t know what to do, is afraid to try questions, etc.
We have sent her to BrainFit, Berries, PSLE Maths tuition, private English tuition and also coach her daily ourselves. Her English tutor struggles with her being distracted. And we have a feeling all this is only making very little difference.
We need expert help - especially in helping her with:
1) Confidence - she has low esteem, thinks she can’t do questions.
2) Exam techniques, keeping to time
3) Subject content - as described above
We really, really need help. We are tearing our hair out on a daily basis and my wife and I are close to breaking down over this.
Are there any professional folks we can approach - especially on confidence and exam technique? We are willing to fork out for good services in this area.
Regards
Troubled Dad

RE: How to teach English Vocabulary and Exam Techniques?
Hi all
My P3 girl is very weak in:
1) English Vocabulary
2) Exam technique - keeping to the time, she gets distracted, writes answers slowly etc.
How do I teach the above two items?
Thanks.

RE: Drama / storytelling, maths and "general knowledg" programs
Hi all
I’ve a son who is turning four in Dec this year.
- He is bright and curious about the world, likes to ask questions.
- He takes to Math and numbers very well.
- He is always asking to learn "lists" of facts and gives all sorts of precocious replies to questions, etc.
We’d like to find out if there are some good enrichment programs which will help him develop, specifically in the areas of:
- Drama / speech. We would love for him to speak confidently, stand in front of a group and tell stories, etc. There are very few places that focus on this I think.
- Maths capability. Are there any good "math" related development programs. He is good with numbers and can count way up to hundreds. We are also interested in e.g. chess programs too.
- Also, any programs which teach "general knowledge" - what cities there are, geography, the arts, who is Mozart, who are the queens and kings of England, what is World War II - I would also like him to try some of these.
Thank you. -

Hi
Anyone knows which centre OrangeBelt meant by when she mentioned … "Then she moved to another centre where it was a mix of both (straight forward and higher level thinking/heuristic questions) and her son did extremely well…in fact the teacher asked my friend "What is your secret for making C**** do so well?" -

Hi OrangeBelt,
I think you are right that the fit depends on the child.Mama_ambitious:
Sorry I mean to get feedback!
Also like to add, this is my personal opinion and also each kid is different so please read in that perspective! To avoid any hard feelings!
I have 2 friends who went to this centre; I believe that k2 level which my friends tell me - this centre is perfect in that its is more manipulative based where learning is made fun and enjoyable while learning concepts for Maths.
One friend left at K2 as she turned into SAHM and could coach her DS herself. The other continued at P1 with this centre..unfortunately, she told me that at P1 her son didn't do well in school as the work in school for Maths now focuses on more Thinking Skills and not just straight forward questions (in fact I think that is true for all Primary School Maths starting with P1s).
Her DS could ace the ccentre questions and test but in school stumble onto the higher level Thinking questions. :scared:
Then she moved to another centre where it was a mix of both (straight forward and higher level thinking/heuristic questions) and her son did extremely well..in fact the teacher asked my friend \"What is your secret for making C**** do so well?\"
So I think like what mama_ambitious said, depends on the fit. Personally (no offence to all), based on my research; I believe that this centre is for the kindergarteners (k2) and even P1s to a certain extent (maybe if your child is of average ability) but maybe in P2s onwards you should focus on other centres...
I dropped you a PM message on the above. Would like to ask you a question, hope it is ok - thanks! -
RE: Urgently need help for transport to Growing Up Gifted
Hi everyone
We are thinking of signing up our son for Growing Up Gifted (GUG) next year to stretch his capabilities. He is absorbing Chinese and numbers very well and we want to help him grow.
The trouble is, we stay in Bukit Timah and the school bus for GUG (their office is in Novena) won’t come to pick my boy up … does anyone have any ideas what to do? The classes are daily 2 pm to 5 pm, Mon to Fri. We can’t pick him up as my wife and I are both working.
We really want to send him there, would there be transport options for us (we are willing to pay premium for transport)?
Thank you.
