Hi parents, i am trying to buy a PC/Laptop for the house. is there a preference in Maris? meaning ...... I was thinking of a Mac, but i am worry if school teaches windows.... please help me. i hope my question is not too stupid.

Mac can double up as PC .... meaning it can run windows and ms office programs, etc. You can configure your machine to run both.

Err...it should be \"pei du ma ma\". Later, students+parents+staff of that school come after you. 🦆 :siam:

I've heard of this but is this still in vogue? Given our high cost of living and these pei du mama don't have work permits..... can survive meh?

I curious to know the difference between a government school vs international / private school, from a foreigner’s point of view. The pros and cons of each and what is it that tip your decision. Foreigners do have options in my opinion.

Is this the first time when Singapore schools are turning away foreginers?
Alumni bring more true diversity to schools

      From Tan Le Peng

Keeping at least 40 places for those without prior connections is still a populist measure, no matter how one cuts it. People would simply move near the schools, creating a tighter circle of those who live in select addresses. On the other hand, the alumni of a school, having gone through the vicissitudes of life, contrary to the fairytale image the public holds, have achieved varied degrees of success, hold different jobs and are scattered around the country. They bring more diversity to the school than by merely using distance or having a quota for the unconnected.
      ===========================================

This article appears in TODAY today. I am speechless at the writer's ignorance.

Point 1: He thinks that ONLY alumni have gone through the vicissitudes of life

Point 2: He thinks that people who stays near the school are not successful and all hold same jobs

Point 3: He thinks Singapore is VERY BIG and someone who stays in Changi is SO DIFFERENT from someone who stays in Jurong.

:goodpost: I was like :siao: speechless too when I read it.

Sounds like someone in KSP

I'm glad there are many who see how ludicrous a notion this is.
These are the people with the elitist mindset that think the world revolves around them.

Ya, just for English part, he can go on and on without even looking at outline or scripts! My god, I must SALUTE him! :salute: Who can replace him in current cabinet? Who has such charisma? NONE!
I think a teleprompter was used in the NDR. 🙂

Succession planning is always part of leadership renewal. The process is probably on-going. I'm quite sure they can find a capable person worthy of leadership.

No matter how many seats are available, the balloting probability may still be as bad...

      12 seats >> 38 pple (1:3)
40 seats >> can be 120 pple balloting (also 1:3)

So key thing is to move within 1km then may stand more chance. Then some pple will say the rich will benefit... no end.
      Absolutely!

Its a zero sum game. Only fixed number of seats is available, so only a fixed number who gets in will be happy, the rest will be upset.

But by allocating 40 seats minimum to the unconnected common folks, the system is more inclusive lor. Without this, then there is a high chance there will be a in-take/batch that will see a complete shut-out by the time it reaches 2B/2C (all taken by phase 1 and 2A).

That doesn't sound right.. I mean the implementation of at least 40 in phase 2B or 2C... Isn't that already easily achieved by most schools? Even if its just phase 2C? Or am I misunderstanding something here?

      :slapshead:

The Bukit Timah schools are the ones targeted I think, nanyang, Henry park, rgps - I don't think any of those have 40 places by 2c for a few years....don't quote me, I don't fact check!

I would think all (or almost all) the SAP and GEP schools + some SHHK and mission schools + others are popular. I believe there are quite a few popular schools have < 40 seats left by the time it got to 2C.

40 places, quite a miserable number honestly. Anyhow, a step in the right direction.

Is it fixed 40 seats for 2C and 40 seats for 2B?

      Or is it 40 for 2B and 2C combined (i.e. 20 for 2B & 20 for 2C)?

With this 2A will probably see balloting for the first time. Also more will join as alumni to enhance their chances.

This appears to be moving away from inbreeding and elitism.

Lets see how this new change are actually implemented in details from MOE. More importantly how will new applicants react to this change. Small tweak but enough for parents to scramble and make plans to maximize their chances. Kiasu mah ......

Chief .... PM also know about KSP .... famous liao

Why it always sound so easy for celebrities to enrol their kids to those popular schools that S'porean staying within 1km may not even stand a chance??!

There's a similar article in chinese and comments were made on this in another thread.

Question is .... is the child SC?

Was his application really successful at PCPS? Maybe his parents is an alumni.

This popular school is oversubscribed annually and SC are fighting to get in. I'm sure people are keen to know how he got in. Or maybe its just a tabloid creating a rumour.
