      1) Mrs Tan has just enough money to buy 24 apples or 40 pears. If she wants to buy equal number of apples and pears, how many of each type can she buy with the amount of money?

      Keep the amount of money fixed.
      Keep dividing until we can't divide further. We reach the ratio that 3 apples cost the same as 5 pears. i.e. 3 apples are interchangeable with 5 pears.

      Once you get there, to find the equal number of apples and pears, we can \"count\" and see that Mrs Tan can buy 15 apples and 15 pears with the same amount of money.

The numbers of hamsters left in Pet Shop A was 5 times the number of the hamsters in Pet Shop B. What was the total number of hamsters in both shops before any of the hamsters were sold?

      4 units = 32 hamsters
      1 unit = 32 / 4 = 8 hamsters
      Total number of hamsters at first = 8 + 70 + 8 + 70 = 156 hamsters
