Ivy had 3 times as many stamps as Jacky.. After Ivy gave away 19 stamps and Jacky gave away 3 stamps, both of them had the same number of stamps left. How many stamps did Jacky have at first?

2 units --> 19-3=16
1 unit (Jacky) --> 16/2=8

Correct?
How to draw the model?

May I know it asking Calvin was 7 times. But thats only 6 units in the model as I needs to explain to my boy.
šŸ˜„
If you look at Calvin's bar, it is 7u = (u+12) + (u+12) + (u+12).
It means the balance of 4u = 12+12+12 = 36, so u = 9.

U can re-arrange the u's together and the 12's together within the same bar. May be easier to see.

Calvin had thrice as many sweets as Mike. If Mike gave away 12 sweets to his sister, Calvin would have 7 times as many sweets as Mike. How many sweets did Calvin have?

Do you know if marks will be penalised if do not draw the arrow? Thank you.
I don't know... I'm neither a teacher nor tuition teacher. But I don't feel marks should be deducted if the arrow isn't there, so long the solution is clearly demonstrated.

Thank both.

I still not understand.
when A is double is it same as A is twice.
How come A is one unit for both ans.
It's the interpretation. The word \"when\" doesn't mean it has actually happened. It is just describing a scenario.

Bao Ming wants to buy 6 shirts but he is short of $7. If he buys 5 shirts, he will have $11 left. How much money does Bao Ming have?

ans: 101

BM = 6S -7
BM = 5S + 11

Therefore,
6S - 7 = 5S + 11
6S - 5S = 11 + 7
S = 18

BM = (5 x 18) + 11 or (6 x 18) - 7
BM = 101 (ans)
