Hi there,

Anyone can help me on following 5 very challenging questions, thanks in advance :boogie:

Qn 5. Charlie and Mr Brown had the same number of buttons. If Charlie gives 500 buttons to Mr Brown, Mr Brown would have 6 times as many buttons as Charlie. How many buttons did Charlie have at first?

http://i49.tinypic.com/ipcu1y.png\">

After giving 500 buttons to Mr Brown, Charlie would have 500x 2 = 1000 less buttons than Mr Brown.

Charlie's buttons left = 1000/5 = 200
Charlies's buttons at first = 200 + 500 = 700

cheers.

Qn 4. Ali had $190 more than Baba at first. After Baba had spent $50, Ali had 4 times as much money as Baba had left. How much did Ali have at first?

http://i47.tinypic.com/242ajq1.png\">

After Baba spent $50,
Ali would have ($190 + $50) = $240 more than Baba

$240/3 = $80
Ali's money --> $80 x 4 = $ 320

cheers.

Hi, sorry to trouble all of you again and need your help to solve this question.

Dave has 11 times as much as Oscar. Calvin and Dave have $172. Calvin and Oscar have $92. How much does Calvin have?

Solving for fun (below is the way I train my own kids).
Hi

Anyone know if there's another way to solve the below question apart from finding the combination numbers to make 14?

http://i50.tinypic.com/2gy0oxx.jpg\">

Since 7 and 8 are given,
14-8=6
14-7=7
7+6+1=14
1+5+8=14
8+2+4=14
7+3+4=14

Your patten should be

7 3 4

6 2

1 5 8

My \"lazy\" way would be to first note that 6 cannot be in either of the corner circles or next to 8 as it would total 14. So I'd put 6 next to 7 (either across or down, doesn't matter), so 1 would go into the corner circle next to that, and 5 goes between 1 and 8. That leaves 2, 3 and 4, so 4 would have to go in the other corner circle, leaving 3 between 7 and 4, and 2 between 8 and 4.
Heuristics: Yep. 6 cannot be at the corner or at the right side (they will add up to 14 just with 2 numnbers).
So let's put 6 at the top middle circle.
It means the top corner is 14-7-6=1.
So the right side circle is 14-8-1=5.

We are now left with 2, 3, 4.
The left circle and bottom corner circle adds up to 7. So we use 3 for left circle and 4 for bottom corner circle.
This leaves 2 for the bottom middle circle.

• RE: Q&A - P2 Math

A duck has 2 legs, and a cow has 4 legs.

There are 38/2 = 19 pairs of legs.

So i will just assign 2 pairs of legs to a cow, 1 pair of legs to a duck. This pattern repeats until I hit 12 animals.
The last 2 pairs of legs has to be for a cow, not for 2 ducks. Otherwise you won't get 12 animals.

• RE: Q&A - P1 Math

Reading through the threads, I feel it’s important to realise why model drawing and number bonds are taught at an early age.

My girl is now in P2. Like many parents, I learnt number bonds & model drawing together with her. Initially, i have the same familiar grouses (too difficult for P1, algebra is easier & more suitable).
After much practising, I have began to appreciate the usefulness and extensibility of these concepts. Once well-acquainted, it allows the child to use a single model drawing concept to solve higher-order questions using basic part-part-whole concepts. It brings them back to the basics. It will broaden and deepen the child’s thinking (which will serve them well in future), rather than focus on applying "already developed/derived" methods/techniques which hide the basics and can have limitations when they hit more advanced questions that push the boundaries of their understanding.
