    • RE: Singapore for Singaporeans?

Telephoned restaurant to make reservation for dinner, and leave name as eg. Mr Tan or Mrs Wong. The waiter (definitely not local) who answered the phone call actually had to ask, can you spell "tan" or "wong", such common surnames some more…

      Hi Ichigokun

I have read some of your posts. You appear to be a very knowledgeable teenager and are interested in many things (you are even self-learning Korean Language and teaching aunties, uncles here!).
As to why you had not done well for your exams, maybe you should do some self-reflections. If I remember correctly, you had achieved a very decent PSLE t-score, which means that you are smart. So, this time round could it be your lack of enough effort, poor time management, lack of focus in class, prioritising the wrong things? A smart person like you should be able to pick yourself up from where you had fallen. Further, if you put in effort, tried your best, I believe your parents would be more than happy. In the next term, please remember to update us with your improved results, OK. I believe you are capable of it.

PS: just to share with you my friend’s daughter (real case, I know this friend for 17 years). Her daughter got 220+ for her psle, went on to a secondary school in Bedok, but through sheer hard work, achieved 8 distinctions in her "O" levels. Even her weakest subjects, English and Maths, also got distinctions. Marvellous, right? The girl is now in a junior college. Hope this can be an inspiration to you!

      我深有同感。哈哈,感觉讲稿是出自一个PRC的手。

almost fainted after listening to his speech....machiam cctv movie script.... didn't know he so ba.....lack of sincerity....like that, how to communicate with the voters....[/quote]Had a good laugh. At some points, I thought he would turn to look at the sky and sing \"我问天,我问天...\" quite Taiwan drama-ish.

You seem to have a good suggestion for parents to try Popular Bookstore. I'm sure everyone agrees that until there is an end in sight to the madness, this has become a necessary stop-gap measure. What will become of kids of parents who are illiterate, or who are not so academically inclined? Who will choose those books for them? It is no easy feat selecting assessment books from Popular because of the sheer variety. One does require a pretty good level of understanding about the curriculum each year to make a good selection.

Ask a literate teacher to recommend some. Problem solved. 😃

      Good common sense!

    • RE: Too late to start learning piano at 7yrs old?

I agree, nothing is too late to learn, there are adults learning ballet, piano, senior citizens learning IT stuff. So, nothing is impossible if the interest level is there ... unless the teacher is no good :siam:

    • RE: Enrichment class for a K1 kid

Would like to put in my thoughts here - I believe "a child" is about the same age as my son. Like "a child’s" parents, hubby and I did not sign up our son for any single enrichment classes during his pre-primary school days. Even now, in secondary school, his days are tuition-free and enrichment-free. He spent his childhood reading (lots and lots of it), playing with toy cars, dinosaurs, legos, watching Tom & Jerry, Hi-fives, Power Ranger … and he turned out OK. He is doing OK in school, in fact, hubby "allows" him to achieve "whatever results he can achieve based on his own capability and as long as he puts in effort". While many school-going children complain of "time not enough", my son has the luxury to indulge in his favourite past-times - soccer, reading, catch movies with daddy, outings with friends … Many times I also wonder whether I am doing the right thing, sensing that competition is so intense here. But I put myself in his shoes. After spending hours in school, after being drilled by teachers in school and returning home so late, is it fair for him if I request him to do more and more worksheets, attend more lessons?

My close friends and people around me also adopt the same attitude as me towards our kids’ education, and these kids turn out well-adjusted and doing OK in school too. Maybe we are a bunch of out-dated parents, maybe some might even say we are being irresponsible? But I keep reassuring myself, if a kid is being 逼得太紧, 会有反效果, but if you let your kid flourish on his own (you know your own kid - whether sensible or not), he will be 懂事 and knows he is being appreciated for who and what he is and in turn, tries his best.

Lastly, I would like to appeal to parents to inculate in their children, the love for reading - ie. reading for the love of it, not reading to improve English, reading to note down "creative phrases" for compo. After the kids had fallen in love with reading, the improve English and compo parts will fall in nicely. What more, the kids would by then have acquired tonnes of general knowledge from reading. Just my 2cents.

Parents who missed the Meet Parents Session Principal's

Briefing may want to know that our kids are in good hands.

RV is officially ranked 4th among the JC/IP schools for the 2011 A Level. Ranking is based on University Admission Score. The cohort has also performed above expectation (projection based on PSLE score) in the 3 key indicators (UAS, H2 MSG, % GP pass). UAS and H2 MSG also improve compared to 2010 cohort.

Number of confirmed PSC Scholarship awardees to date has increased 4 fold over 2010 cohort (2) and counting.

I assume RV is now just behind RJC, HCI, VJC based on data collated by parents earlier. The top 3 were not mentioned during the briefing.

Very happy to know that RV has done so well despite having the lowest PSLE intake among the top JC/IP schools.

      Hi Rosecy
We missed the briefing. Thank you so much for sharing the info. :salute:

Just wanted to add one more thing (but I hope I am not accused of \"advertising\" for the school). Principal also mentioned during talk (the one on 24 March) that he had been P in a few schools and he considered students in RV the most well-mannered ones. So generally speaking, can also say that our kids are in good hands and under good influence.

By the way, anyone knows any SAP schools that offer both higher and normal Chinese?

Nan Hua (non-IP) and Catholic High / St Nicholas (next year IP) offer both higher and normal Chinese.
I think Hwa Chong also has some students taking \"O\" level normal Chinese in Sec 3 (subject to verification).
