I will be watching it too.
Let me spice it up - the winner truly deserved it. So get your pop corn ready :rahrah:
I am a little bit disappointed with the format of NSC actually ..less exciting than old format . some time a bit of luck involved .. after watching the QF and SF,so many team (also in the past years session) that leads thru 1 -3/ bonus rounds simply become \"kiasu\" or \"kiasee\" mentally and literally take less risk, quit the Rapid Fire and response round all-together .. hoping that their opponents won't catch-up on them or killed themselves with 1 or 2 wrong answers.
Beside one and half minutes of the rapid Fire and response is hardly enough time to allow the team to do real battle. Perhaps a 3 minute Round would be more suitable.. just my humble opinion. Yeah, I do sound like a sour grape here ...
The only team that did not exhibit this \"kiasu\" or \"kiasee\" mentality in the rapid fire n response round was the NUSH team. They beat the HCI team in the QF by answering 5 correct qns and 1 wrong answer despite trailing HCL by few points. The HCI team literally quit the rapid response round hoping NUSH won't catch up on them. They were proven wrong then.
In the 1st SF, although NUSH was leading comfortably by 5 points from RGS at end of bonus round yet they show no sign of \"Kiasee\" mentality.
They answered 3 wrong qns but still won the semi-final. RGS lost by 1 point b'cos they also answered 1 wrong qn. I was told the RGS gals cried b'cos they thought they missed the final and they could have won if they have let the NUSH team do all the honour of RF..
But then as the best losing semifinalist, they have the last laugh ...
In the old format, teams must answer compulsory questions in various Maths, science and general category. To me that is a real test and excitements. This day it is more of \"showmanship and presentation skill\" when teams can hope to score good marks in round 1 to 3, they can literally switch off totally, hardly any attempts at the rapid fire round thus losing all the competitive spirit in a maths and science challenge. So the winning strategy is to secure maximum marks in early 1 -3 or bonus rounds ..and not to lose marks at all by not answering (if possible) in rapid fire round .. a sure good chance to win !!!
But a Science (and Math) Challenge is about answering tough questions ..

Not true. For RI and RGS, you can choose whatever subject combination you like and the school will try its best to accomodate you. Even if you are the ONLY student choosing that particular combination, the school will arrange for you to take it. That’s how flexible and accomodating the schools are. And there’s no such thing as having to be the top certain percentage to get into a subject. And no quota either.
Hi , I think Canli is referring to the Raffles Academy ?not everyone can take right?
Canli didn’t mention RA. Just said subjects they like. And HCI and NYGH does not have RA so she can’t be referring to RA.
Hmm… no need to be so defensive … the fact is that RI (or RA for that matter ) is .student just don’t have a free choice … there are(Hmm.) ]discriminations(GEP] etc) no matter how you want to put it…
NUSH don’t have special class for GEP .no even special entrance for DSA There are GEP who don’t make it to Round1 or even round 2…There are put together .No distinction .That’s why GEP feel at home in NUSH (not branded). . Same reason why some GEP choose NUSH over RI/RGS (eg my DD 2 years back). They are very happy lot. -

Went to the preview of NUS High today. I may say, I'm very very impressed with NUS High. Their facilities, teachers and seniors left us good and deep impression. And the best best thing of all, there will no \"O\" level or \"A\" level examinations for my son! !! Their system is somewhat like NUS based on credits and such. They'll have a diploma at the end of their 6 years course and the chance of getting into NUS is very high. I nearly burst into tears of relief when I heard that. Now, need to encourage him to sustain there for the next 6 years. ... :boogie:
Based on past graduating cohorts it 100% into local univ and top overseas for those with A*Star, DSTA, DSO or PSC (and more recently SAF scholarship) and students on PapaMama scholarship b'cos NUSH Diploma and curriculum is highly-rated in Ox-Bridge,Austrralian and IVY league universities. For those graduating from NUSH there are already half-a-foot in most universities for science and maths related courses. The sterling performance of ex-NUSH graduate in top notch (Imperial College) UK university ( eg Chua-Lynn ) actually trigger UK academics to visit NUSH personally to understand why she is so outstanding in her area of study. -

As long as he met the minimum requirement for express course i.e PSLE T-score 200, so it won't be a problem. Qualifying thru DSA means he is OK for the pace and the curriculum, but he's really need to work very hard if fallen behind.Yeah, the results is out and my son got in!! We are going to the preview this Saturday. My son attended Camp 1 and Camp 2 but didn't get called up for interview.
All the best to all for PSLE, regardless whether your sons / daughters got in or not...
I just hope my son can now be less stressed over PSLE. He has been having insomnia this year (PSLE year for him).
Does anyone know if he can still get kicked out of this DSA if he doesn't meet a certain criteria for PSLE? -

Is the diploma exam at the end a one-off do or die like the 'A' levels or are assessments spread over the semesters? How do the olympiads and additional modules affect the final diploma?
There are No \"O\" or \"A\" level - one off examination. Progress and achievements are recorded and computed throughout the 6 years. However from 2013 on wards, only results from Y3-Y6 are counted in their final graduation CAP. The student gets a NUSH Diploma with High Distinction, Distinction, Merit or Pass depending on their Cumulated Aggregate Points. Perfect CAP would be 5.0. Yes, certain modules like 3rd langauges (if done well) could be added to beef up their CAP, Olympiads likewise..walterp:
Did he mention how many are attending the interview? This year seems to have more students going for the interview.
Next year is the school 10th anniversary. Look like they may be ramping up the possible intake for 2014 DSA cohort. Past year Cohorts size after DSA + PSLE have been (since 2011) something like 129, 13x, 13? less than possible max intake of 170.
But then they have always been emphasizing quality instead of quantity.
Mind you (according to my Y3 DD and her seniors) the life of NUSH Y1-4 can been describe as honeymoon, earth-hell, hell, hell. The amt of workloads get increasing heavier all kind of (individual + group) projects and the content get harder, the expectation getting higher, and for the better student in Y2/Y3/Y4 cohorts they could be studying 3 or 4 additional modules like computing, Olympiacs, 3rd Languages etc and those (esp girls) strong in languages and humanity also took part in all kind of competitions like Moot Parliament Programme (MPP) , Earthquake competition , Eureka and endless preparations for Physics, Maths, Chemstry, Biology and Informatics Olympiads. On top of that there are also Exchange programme with various international schools.
So parents be prepare for your DS/DD to be psyched up to enter NUSH - it tough to get in and even tougher to sustain and perform well in there. -

Hi all, I need some help with this question.
The solution set of the inequality |2x+a|>5 is {x∈ℝ: x>1 or x<b}
Find the value of a and b.
Thanks in advance!

The HK super kid was DS1 CCA mate. Left mid last year back to HK university. A very accelerated kid, very advanced in math I heard.
He top the y5 cohort maths, the Y4 cohort physics and y1 MT when he was in Y1.
That's right my DD Y3 cohort strength is only 158. 2 out of the 129 from original Year 1 left. One is super HK kid at age 15 with accelerated Y5 maths and Physics apparently got accepted by homeland H K University.walterp:

Don't mean to throw a wet blanket - I am not sure of your theory but I do know that NUSH emphasizes on quality more than quantity. I know, at least for the past 3 years, the total enrollment for Year 1 intake (DSA + post PSLE) was less than 150. this means that intake via DSA was less than 140. Not NUSH practice to fill up all the vacancies.
Each year, NUSH has the flexibility of adding 50 students at Year 3 - maximum cohort size from Year 3 onwards is 220 However, this year cohort size of Year 3 is less than 160.
The other PRC left for home after Y2.
So only 127 + 31 new Y3 students are accepted into the cohort this year. You can see that NUSH really emphases quality and not quantity. The new Y3 students also need to undergo a year of additional bridging courses for Maths, Physics and Chemistry. Out of the 31, let not not forget MOE usual practices of recruiting a certain no of Vietnam, PRC scholars. -

Think none of us can answer except the school with regards to the actual nos. of COs & WLs will be issued out.
Can't be just 150 or even 170 in total. The school has to be prepared for successful candidates holding multiple COs/WLs from other schools as well
I'm not surprise 100 for COs & 150 for WL.
If in the end 50 COs chosen other school & free up 50 to make it 100 for WLs..
And among 150 WLs, 50 chosen other school.. So balance is 100
Finally the school can give confirmation to the balance of 100 upon the release of psle results
Anyway if WLs is more than the available slot, the school has the choice to reject some away.. That's the flexibility of issuing out more WLs
Just my guessing only
